The surface emerges gradually. Marks repeat, accumulate, and settle into one another, shaping colour through their movement. Each gesture remains subtle in isolation, yet together they hold a larger presence, carrying traces of time, attention, and the experience of looking.

It is always a pleasure to participate in the RSA Annual exhibition. The exhibition is a melting pot of contemporary art from across Scotland and further afield, with all artworks shown side by side in the Academy’s grand Neoclassical galleries on Princes Street.

This painting takes its cue from Robert Frost’s poem Mowing, written in 1913 - a quiet reflection on the rhythm of work and the clarity that comes from attention. In the poem, the speaker listens to the soft whisper of the scythe in the grass and wonders what it might be saying. Frost suggests that the meaning is not hidden in dreams or distant promises, but in the work itself.
