“Inside an interior designer’s character-rich, ‘70s-inspired home in Melbourne
Like peering into a fashion designer’s wardrobe or dining at a chef’s home, touring an interior designer’s house feels voyeuristic, insider and a privilege—a masterclass in design and personal style. The Melbourne home of Anny Benjamin, interior designer and founder of @studio_ab___ and her fiancé is no exception.”

Designing your own home is something else. It tests you, pushes you, and at times completely drains you… but then it gives back in ways nothing else can. The setbacks, the constant decision making, the moments where you question everything, followed by those small wins that pull you forward again.
And then you arrive at this point.
Where you can step back, take it all in, and see the whole story come together.
What started as an idea, slowly taking shape, evolving, shifting, until it became something I’m proud to share.
With Residence 1973, it was always about honouring what was already there. Built in the 70s, we wanted to lean into its character and let that guide every decision. You’ll see it in the materials, the palette, and the details that tie everything together.
Saskia, thank you for your support and belief in this project.
Rebecca, the way you articulated the project went far beyond anything I could have said myself. You captured it with such clarity and care, and truly honoured the intent behind it. I’m so grateful.
And to Kryssia of @hunting_utopia and @rubinutama, thank you for capturing our home so beautifully.
Our home is grounded in wherewe came from, our childhood and the people we are evolving into today.

Now that I’ve had a moment to let it sink in, I can put it all into words.
Last year I was shortlisted for ADR’s 30 Under 30 and when I didn’t make the final list, it truly stung. I questioned whether I should put myself out there again, another year in a row. Rejection can feel so loud.
I kept going back and forth with my self and just before entries closed, I chose to give it another crack.
To now be named in the final 30 feels incredibly special. After last year’s disappointment, this moment feels all the more special.
I’m so grateful to ADR for creating space to celebrate emerging Australian talent, and honoured to stand alongside such an inspiring cohort of designers, makers and architects. Thank you to the judges & mentors for recognising the intention and heart behind my work.
I’m looking forward to learning, connecting and continuing to grow, both creatively and in business. I am truly grateful for this moment.

#adr30under30
The @adr30under30 retreat went far beyond anything I could have expected. To be surrounded by such a talented, generous and inspiring group of people was so special. A once in a lifetime opportunity that I’ll forever be grateful for.
There is something really powerful about being in a room with people who are all deeply passionate about what they do. The conversations, the knowledge shared, the honesty, the encouragement and the new connections are things I’ll carry with me forever.
A huge thank you to our mentors & the team at @ausdesignreview - Paul, @alvinpwu, Maddy & Jill for creating such an incredible platform for young designers to connect, learn, be recognised and feel genuinely supported in our careers.
A big thank you to the wonderful sponsors, @neolithofficial@designerrugs @krostfurniture @laufen_australia @signatureappliancesau @miele @tonguengrooveau for helping make this experience possible.
Being able to experience it all at @potatoheadbali was an absolute dream. What a beautiful place!
Feeling very grateful, inspired & enlightened.
Already looking forward to the reunion next year.

Last but certainly not least, @newrelic.mdw presented by @minilo_studio & my talented friend @hunney_studio with @pepite.gallery
New/Relic is an exhibition about the fixtures we reach for everyday: the hooks, handles, and joinery pulls that shape how we move through space, and rarely get a second look.
Bridging the gap between mass-produced fixtures and the growing demand for crafted, locally made alternatives that sit at the intersection of ornament and function. With an incredibly talented lineup of designers from across disciplines - it’s so cool!

This week, Studio ab turns 2.
What a journey these last two years have been. I still pinch myself at what has unfolded in such a short period of time.
Starting Studio ab was one of the biggest leaps of faith I’ve ever taken. Establishing a studio asks so much more of you than creativity alone. It asks for resilience, discernment, trust, patience, problem-solving, care and passion.
What I’ve come to understand more deeply is that good design is never just about the finished image. It is about people, trust, listening properly, holding the details, making considered decisions, and creating spaces that feel personal, functional and deeply lived in.
To our clients, thank you for trusting us with your homes, your stories and such personal parts of your lives. It never feels lost on me how meaningful that trust really is.
To my husband Chris, thank you for believing in me endlessly.
To my family, friends, suppliers, collaborators and industry partners, thank you. Anyone in this industry knows that none of this happens alone. It takes many people behind the scenes to bring these spaces to life, and I’m incredibly grateful for every person who has supported Studio ab along the way.
Looking back, it feels surreal to think about how much has happened in only two years. We’ve had the privilege of seeing all of our photographed projects published, including @vogueliving , @thelocalproject and @hunterandfolk as well as being named as an @adr30under30 30UNDER30 finalist - milestones that are still incredibly special and significant to us.
Somewhere amongst all of that, Chris and I also renovated our first home together and got married, making this season of life feel equally as full personally as it has professionally.
Thank you for being here and for coming along on the journey that is Studio ab. I’m so excited to see and share what the next chapter holds.

OBJECT SPOTLIGHT
Meet the H04 Pull Handle & H05 Knob by @bankston_architectural a statement in both form and materiality.
Crafted in American walnut and smooth nickel, it brings together warmth and precision in a way that feels both tactile and refined. Its generous scale and considered proportions give it presence within the joinery, elevating what is often seen as a functional detail into a defining feature of the space.
Selected as a continuation of the home’s 1970s material narrative, it reinforces the balance between warmth and refinement that underpins the design, allowing even the smallest elements to contribute to the overall story.
Designed to be experienced as much through touch as through sight, it anchors the kitchen and joinery throughout, reinforcing the layered material language of the home.
Stay tuned as we continue to spotlight pieces that bring depth, character and intention into the spaces we design.

Where a kitchen becomes a statement.
Where materiality takes precedence, and each element is selected for both presence and purpose.
The @bankston_architectural H04 pull handles & H05 knobs were approached as a defining feature within the joinery. Crafted in American walnut and smooth nickel, they bring warmth, weight and precision, grounding the space while elevating the everyday.
Set against the richness of the stone and blush-toned joinery, the hardware reinforces the layered material language that runs throughout the home, proving that even the most functional elements can carry presence.
