It is quite an honour for the whole Yurlu Country sound team to win an AACTA Award for Best Sound in a Documentary.

First and foremost we would all like to thank the Parker family for the huge responsibility of helping to tell Maitland Parker’s story.

Maitland Parker was a Banjima elder who faced his own mortality with courage and purpose. He was determined to tell his story in the hopes it would help pressure the Western Australian Government to clean up the more than 3 million tonnes of deadly asbestos waste covering 46,000 hectares of the Pilbara and Banjima country.

The whole sound team all felt the huge responsibility of working on Maitland’s story.

@stuartmelvey and Cameron Grant’s sound design is authentic and emotive. From the gentle sound of water to the violence of the vast mining operations.

@laurenligovich’s dialogues were flawless and thoughtful. A pleasure to mix.

All the production sound recordists Adam Roberts, @stereo_works_ , @solidstayt , Richard Hubbard, and Tom Bannigan the DoP all did an amazing job and deserve all recognition for this award.

@helena.czajka’s score is unique and profound. She is a superstar and I always feel very privileged mixing her music.

@tombannigan’s cinematography is absolutely stunning and is so inspiring to cut and mix sound to.

@_franforbes_ edit is lyrical and flowing. Always thoughtful of the tempo and dynamism of sound.

@yaaraboumelhem is an incredible director who leads with impeccable taste, empathy and integrity. I hope I am able to help with her films forever.

It was so great to see so many friends and also to see so much incredible work amongst all of the sound nominees in all categories, Film, TV and Documentary. It’s very humbling and rewarding to be a part of the amazing film sound community in Australia.

Thanks @aacta for putting on such a great event and festival that is going from strength to strength.

Maitland Parker was a Banjima Elder who fought ceaselessly against the mining giants to clean up millions of tonnes of asbestos tailings battling mesothelioma. A huge thanks to director Yaara Bou Melhem, the sound post team - Sam Haywood, Lauren Ligovich, Cameron Grant, and to the many location recordists including Adam Roberts who made it happen. We hope this award brings further awareness to this cause.

Our film MATES storms Dublin this month and we’re absolutely giddy about it. Dublin International Film Festival! Our beautiful chaos heads overseas.

We can’t wait to explain to our Irish fam why Michael Bevan’s 4 against the West Indies in 1996 was one of the finest knocks in Australian cricket history.

“How you livin life like that bro?”

Last ball. Four runs needed. One wicket left. The entire Caribbean already celebrating. Bevan smacks it straight down the ground to the boundary for victory.

That refusal to fold. That beautiful defiance. That’s the spirit of the team behind MATES and their wonderful work getting us to our international prem!

Love you all.

MATES is shipping off to the Dublin International Film Festival! 🇮🇪 Our first overseas film fest. It’s so humbling to see that our Irish fam understands what it truly means to be mates. It’s a really awesome festival with great programming. We’ll be playing February 26 so if you’re in Ireland or the British isles, make the trip and come catch a beer with us 🍻 @dublinfilmfestival #mates #matesfilm #diff #shortfilm

It was great to see so many friends and colleagues at the @austscreensound Awards on Saturday, and it was a huge honour to win Best Sound in a Documentary for @yurlu.country.

Congratulations to all the nominees who were all equally as deserving of the recognition.

Maitland Parker was a Banjima elder who faced his mortality with courage and dignity. He spoke about his illness when it was taboo and left instructions for his family to allow his image and voice to be used to tell his story, in the hopes it would help pressure the Western Australian Government to clean up the more than 3 million tonnes of asbestos waste covering 46,000 hectares of the Pilbara and Banjima country.

Everybody on the crew felt the huge responsibility of working on this film.

@stuartmelvey was meticulous in going through production sound to create authentic and moody atmospheres, and his more esoteric sound design is fantastic. He delivered well beyond expectations.

Cam Grant’s work is world class as always, his sound design is visceral and moving. Literally; his sub is awesome. I’ve lost count of how many films we’ve worked on together and I hope there are many more in our future.

@laurenligovich dialogues are delicate and thoughtful and were a joy to mix.

All the production sound recordists Adam Roberts, @stereo_works_ , @solidstayt , Richard Hubbard, even Tom Bannigan the DoP all did an amazing job.

@helena.czajka score is unique and moving, I love mixing her music this is the third film we have worked on together and it’s always profound.

@tombannigan images are absolutely breathtakingly stunning and @_franforbes_ picture edit is lyrical. There is so much intent and thought put into Franks cuts it’s a real pleasure to work with because the film naturally flows so well.

@yaaraboumelhem is an incredible director. She leads with not only vision and drive but with empathy and integrity. I cannot wait to see what comes next.

There is a link in my bio to support the cleanup effort of the deadly waste materials and take action.

The highlight of the event for me was Angus @66mungo impassioned speech advocating for our value as Australian Screen Sound practitioners.

Here’s Sam, giving credit to everyone else but himself when picking up Best Sound in a Documentary at the @austscreensound Awards for YURLU | COUNTRY!

Because he’s too modest, we’ll say it - Sam Hayward MPSE (@showtownsound ) is a master Sound Designer, who created our immersive sound world and brought together an amazing, dedicated crew of sound editors for the film. If you walked away from the film, feeling it in your bones, it’s because of this team - they know how to get sound waves to penetrate your soul.

And because he’s a legend, Sam gave a shoutout to Maitland’s family and Banjima’s campaign to heal their Country - the largest contaminated site in the Southern Hemisphere at Wittenoom. Learn more @cleanupwittenoom

Big ups to everyone involved - a well deserved accolade for all your incredible work!
