My Nhan (65) was the first person shot and killed during the mass shooting in Monterey Park. Nhan’s family said she was in a car and leaving with her dance partner when the gunman fired rounds from outside the driver's side window before he entered the dance hall. Her dance partner was not injured, family members said.

They said she did not know the shooter.

Known to her family and friends as MyMy, she spent many years going to the dance studio on weekends.

"We are starting the Lunar New Year broken. We never imagined her life would end so suddenly. Mymy was 65 years old. If you knew her, you knew her warm smile and kindness was contagious. She was a loving aunt, sister, daughter and friend. Mymy was our biggest cheerleader."

A gunman killed at least 10 people last night in Monterey Park, California, where tens of thousands of Asian American families had gathered to celebrate the Lunar New Year.

Lunar New Year is being recognized in California for the first time as an official state holiday this year.

Los Angeles mayor Karen Bass called news the shooting “absolutely devastating.”

"As investigations determine whether these murders were motivated by Asian hate, we continue to stand united against all attempts to divide us,” she said.

The mass shooter is still at large, and a manhunt is underway. This is a developing story.

Nelson held his longtime partner, Lili Xu in his arms until the ambulance arrived. He says she had 2 bullet holes in her back.

After our interview, I asked him if he wanted to see the surveillance. He said yes. When I showed it to him, he nearly collapsed at the sound of the gunshots & her screams.

Nelson was surrounded by their friends today, who don’t believe this was an attempted robbery like Oakland Police report. They say the getaway vehicle, an older model white Lexus sedan was casing the area at the time.

Nelson’s friends, including Lili’s best friend believe they were targeted because of their race.

This killing comes after Patrick Fung, was shot at close range and died in front of his girlfriend’s home not far from Little Saigon.

If you saw someone digging through your unwanted garbage for cans, would your first instinct be to rush outside to scream and curse at them or would you see how you could help them? The tragedy that happened to Mr. Ma and his family was preventable. Our community leaders (including #AAPI) and government need to have a more honest convo about the most vulnerable in our community. Is govt using every resource at its disposal to ensure the most underserved are reached? The answer through Covid and recent Hurricane Ida was ‘no’. Language access, investment in community organizations and grassroots operations are the floor of what we should be doing, and also what many of us electeds and community leaders had to continuously beg for- from all levels of govt. We must do better.

National AAPI Solidarity 5K Walk happening TOMORROW from 1 to 4 pm at the Boston Chinatown Gate.

On 7/17/21 in NYC, Than Htwe (58) plunged down a flight of subway stairs during a vicious mugging of her and her son. She sustained head trauma so severe that she wasn’t able to wake up. She underwent brain surgery and was intubated in a hospital bed. Tragically Than Htwe passed away and her family decided to donate her organs to those in need.

The NYPD have IDed the perpetrator from surveillance footage as David Robinson. As of today the suspect is still on the loose.
