Stirchley Co-operative Development (SCD)
SCD is a co-operative of community members from Stirchley. Together we’re building affordable homes, sustainable businesses and new public space.

We are overwhelmed by the kind words of support and solidarity we have received from the community over the past 24 hours. Our residents, workers, and wider community are working around the clock to ensure that Stirchley Co-operative Development remains a project run and owned by the community.
Many of you have asked how you can best support us—thank you! We have put together three things that would be greatly helpful.

We need more projects like Stirchley Co-operative Development, where residents and workers are put front and centre in deciding the future of our high streets.
We are both actively working to bring SCD into community ownership and continuing our efforts to expand our model across Stirchley and Birmingham at large.
When McDonald’s wanted to build a drive-through in the heart of Stirchley, our community said no, and we gathered them to decide a better future for that plot of land.
Along with 150 + local residents and workers, and @unit38_ facilitating sessions, we developed The Stirchley Community Plan on Hazelwell Lane; 60 affordable family homes, community-owned shops and leisure spaces, a car-free courtyard garden, and a rooftop sports pitch.
Designed by residents, for residents, this land should build community wealth.

Please help us by writing to the government and sharing the above post. Our businesses face insolvency, some of our residents are already homeless, we are all ready to move in and cannot shoulder this additional cost due to GreenSquareAccords additional delays.

Due to Green Square Accord’s initial rejection of our offer to buy the building (with negotiations still on-going), plus continuing delays with construction, many of our Stirchley Cooperative Development members find themselves in difficult financial situations.
Some of our worker cooperative members are currently without their regular wages, or on reduced wages, due to being unable to move into their new space.
Meanwhile, many of our tenants expected to move in as early as January and have incurred costs like for things like short term accommodation, storage space and increased rent.
We are asking our supporters in the community, our family and our friends, to donate money to help both tenant and worker co-operative members deal with these financial challenges in the short term. We have, so far, been blown away by all the support you’ve given us and we feel very grateful for all of it.
If and when we are able to move into the building we hope to use some of this money to assist our lower income members with moving costs. This will include our newer council tenants, too.
Thank you in advance for anything you are able to give! (Link in bio)

With SCD’s community-led ownership at risk - Stirchley may lose access to the civic spaces this building was designed to bring.
While we have reentered negotiations with GreenSquareAccord, a resolution for community ownership has yet to be made.
Civic spaces are a vital part of democracy and community engagement and we protect these spaces by making them community owned.

Stirchley Co-op Update
After a difficult two and a half weeks, we are pleased to share that negotiations with GreenSquareAccord are back underway, with the support of Birmingham City Council and our larger community.
With a new proposed completion date at the end of April, we’re hopeful that a resolution is within reach and that this ten-year-long project can finally be returned to Stirchley.
We will keep everyone updated as we progress this resolution.
As always, thank you to all those who have come out to support us and shared words of encouragement - we are so thankful to have our community standing with us.

It’s clear that Stirchley, the city of Birmingham, and beyond stands by us as we reenter negotiations with GreenSquareAccord.
Thank you to the 178 people and businesses who wrote us 50+ pages of community support statements.
We look forward to bringing Stirchley Co-op into community ownership for the people of Stirchley and all who believe in a fair and community-owned high street.

Last night, @birminghambikefoundry mechanics and SCD residents, Chris and Sean, attended the launch of “Yes In Our Backyard” in London, a @coopparty report making the case for community-led housing as a solution to the UK’s housing crisis.
We were proud to see SCD with a dedicated call-out: “The Renters Who Refused To Be Priced Out, “a story that feels more relevant today than ever.
It’s great to see community-owned high streets front and centre in this conversation. This is exactly the kind of movement we want to be part of, and there’s plenty more to come. 🏘️

Happy Move-in Day?
Today, March 23rd, was the most recent completion date given to us by GreenSquareAccord. John, one of our residents, was planning to celebrate his 80th birthday in our new home.
Instead, he is 80 years old and homeless. Other residents are having deliveries, flooring, furniture, sent to the wrong addresses entirely.
We are still waiting on a revised build programme, as well as clarity on when and how residents can move into homes they have been working towards for so long.
We look forward to the coming week and finding a resolution that brings the project back to the community.
