C2S is an armchair comprising three handmade wool felts swirled around an
industrial-steel frame. The textile is made from natural pigmented wool from the Norwegian Spælsau sheep (aka Old Norwegian Short Tail Landrace). Often coarse and dirty, the wool has a relatively low commercial value, and is classified at the lowest grade – C2S, which gives the chair its name. In a modern take on tradition, the armchair uses honest materials and construction methods to highlight the unique character of an often-overlooked natural resource. The wool is processed by Norilia and needle-felted at Sjølingstad Uldvarefabrik – a factory protected by the Norwegian Directorate of Cultural Heritage.

When American manufacturer Herman Miller wanted a farmhouse table, they called Norwegian designer Stine Aas.

- When I think of a land table, I think of something that stands steadfast throughout life, like the table my great-great-grandfather built. It is used for everything from baking and eating to playing cards, and has been a gathering place for the family for generations, says @stineaas

The Land Table has an honest look with a tabletop that floats above the base. The aesthetic details subtly enhance its presence, such as the recessed end pieces and the rounded edges of the table legs and frame that rest on the floor.

- It looks rather grand with the top extending out on each side. It was actually something I thought I wouldn't design, but it works well here, she says, adding that when they rounded off the table legs, everything suddenly fell into place.

- When you rest your legs on the frame, it's extremely comfortable. Perhaps the most important design feature is incorporating a warm, organic element that is also functional.

The Americans wanted a complete dining parlour, and Stine deveopled the design language of the table in to a modern sideboard.

- We did not want to compromise on quality. The dining parlour is made of solid oak from trees felled within a radius of just over 50 miles from their production facility in West Virginia, says Stine.

Why don’t we hear more about furniture design from Canada? These are the Uber-Canadian Cleo chairs from design brand EDITS based in Vancouver. They actually do much of their furniture production in Montreal. Cleo is the second piece they’ve introduced, this one designed by Stine Aas. Bent plywood forms the seat, while solid hardwood was used for the frame construction. The arches are on the back when assembled together are supposed to resemble classical architecture (arched colonnades for instance).
