“Malleus Maleficarum”, the “Hammer Of Witches”, written by the German Catholic clergyman Heinrich Kramer and first published in 1486. It could be seen as a collection of extant folk tales and demonolgica codified and reborn as church canon law.

I should make it clear I’m not a scholar of this subject (I’ve got better things to do), but once aware of its existence and content, it is hard not to be morbidly drawn to its towering example of unbridled misogynistic fear and hate.

It seems that the Malleus is an attempt to codify the crimes, detection, trial and punishment of perceived witches. It could also be described as a manual for the sadistic persecution by the gynophobic Catholic Church of women who basically knew well their herblore and human nature, and how to use them. These were women that the church did not understand and could not control, and who operated within forbidden areas according to the purview of the church.’
