Risograph Printing with @howsem
Curated by @thegascollective as part of Material Conversations
๐๏ธ Thursday, May 21, 6:30 - 9:30 PM
๐San Cafe (165 Augusta Ave.)
๐ฅThe event is at capacity. ๐ in bio to join the waitlist!
Over the past five months, GAS Collective has visited Howsem Huang in his Toronto studio, learning about his process and the art of risograph. Hereโs a glimpse:ย
โTucked away in Kensington Market, Howsemโs studio is a vibrant haven for exploring all things risograph!ย
We have met with Howsem a couple of times (both in person and online!) since January to dive into his risograph printing practice. From walking us through the colour and printer mechanics to sharing his personal zine collections and book-designing journey, Howsem gave us an amazing look into the potential, challenges, and longevity of the soy-based medium.ย
We have had the best time brainstorming our upcoming workshop: participants are invited to bring in unique materials and create a collaborative Love Letter to a material that inspires their curatorial practice through risograph.โ
This program is part of Material Conversations, an ongoing research project by GAS Collective, Curators-in-Residence at NAMARA | projects.

From the Curatorial Tour with GAS Collective on Friday, April 10, to Embodied Traces: In Conversation with Alyssa Alikpala and Maria Simmons on Saturday, April 11, it was wonderful to share these immersive experiences with you.
Your curiosity, questions, and engagement brought these events to lifeโexploring themes of metabolism, ritual, and material memory, and diving into the creative processes behind the exhibition.
Weโre so grateful to our Metabolic Loop guest curators Gizem Candan, Steffi Ng Sin Tung along with artists Alyssa Alikpala, and Maria Simmons, for sharing their insights and guiding us through these thought-provoking experiences.

โญ๏ธ Onsite Gallery "Metabolic Loop | The Delaney Family Emerging Curator's Prize" Curator Spotlight: Steffi Ng Sin Tung @steffitung (GAS Collective @thegascollective) โญ๏ธ
โ For my curatorial practice, I primarily focus on the complexities of Asian immigration experiences and also the different alternative collaborative and accessible curatorial practices... โSteffi Ng Sin Tung
Steffi Ng Sin Tung curates, writes, and takes photos to explore the complexities of the Asian immigration experience. Her curatorial work centers on creating joyful, participatory spaces for cross-cultural exchanges. Born and raised in Hong Kong, she is now based in Toronto/Tkaronto.
Steffi Ng Sin Tung is part of the GAS Collective. GAS is a curatorial collective that explores the notion of balance and tension in ecology, exhibition-making and collaboration. The members came together during their MFA studies in the Criticism and Curatorial Practice program at OCAD University, sharing the identity as first-generation Asian immigrants and women of colour working in the art scene.
The Delaney Family Emerging Curatorโs Prize: โMetabolic Loopโ will be on view at Onsite Gallery till May 16.

We are thrilled to welcome our next Curators-in-Residence, @thegascollective ! ๐ซ
From April to September, GAS Collective (@steffitung and @gizemcandanart) will explore materials as a shared ground for knowledge exchange and build upon their ongoing interests in sustainable curatorial cycles and material recirculation.
Material Conversations
GAS Collective
April - September, 2026
Taking the material research and process-based practices of four artists โ @mperaza_ , @elenakirbys and @_masu , and @howsem โ as an entry point, GAS will develop a publication that inquires into how material knowledge can be put into tangible conversations and transformed into exhibition-making strategies for curators as well as creative solutions for other arts practitioners and a wider community use.
Here, artistsโ material knowledges serves as the nexus to explore curatorsโ role in materials and materiality. Why should curators care? How can they learn from artists and mobilize their artistic and technical material strategies to exhibition design? What (new) material kinships might emerge between curators and artists?
๐ Three artist-led curatorial workshops will take place throughout the residency. Registration opens April, 2026. Stay tuned!

โจ UPCOMING EXHIBITION โจ
Please join us next Wednesday, January 21 from 5 - 7 pm for the opening of our upcoming exhibition, ๐๐ฆ๐ต๐ข๐ฃ๐ฐ๐ญ๐ช๐ค ๐๐ฐ๐ฐ๐ฑ (January 21 - May 16, 2026) at Onsite Gallery.
Recipient of the annual Delaney Family Emerging Curatorโs Prize, โMetabolic Loopโ explores the in-betweenness of natural and artificial environments through the concept of metabolism. Curated by GAS Collective, the two-person exhibition features multi-sensory works by artists Alyssa Alikpala and Maria Simmons. It foregrounds their artistic practices that render largely inaccessible environments such as peatlands, and invisible experiences such as metabolism and fermentation more accessible, accentuating the tension and balance involved in translating natural phenomena into gallery spaces through technological means.
Artists:
Alyssa Alikpala @alyssaalikpala
Maria Simmons @rattsarina
Curated by GAS Collective (Gizem Candan @gizemcandanart & Steffi Ng @steffitung)
๐
Reception: Jan 21, 2026 (Fri)
๐ Time: 5-7 pm
๐ Location: Onsite Gallery, 199 Richmond St W Ground Floor, Toronto, ON

โจMeet @steffitung the next artist in AACTโs Newcomer Artist Mentorship Program.
When asked about a recent project sheโs working on, she shared:
โI am working on 2402 (tbd), a photo-book project that brings together the photographs Iโve taken with my grandma over the past two years, whether during my visits back to Hong Kong or through Zoom and phone calls.โ
She added:
โIn this photo-book, I hope to explore different ways of staying connected with my family, as well as experiment with how to archive my grandmaโs stories while we are miles apart.โ
Stay tuned to meet more artists in this cohort โจ
