This Sunday at the Star & Shadow Cinema we’re screening EVERYBODY TO KENMURE STREET, a powerful documentary chronicling one of the most inspiring moments of community resistance in recent years.
In May 2021, a Home Office immigration raid in Glasgow’s Pollokshields sparked an immediate response from local residents, who gathered in huge numbers to prevent two neighbours from being taken away. Streets were blocked, people linked arms around the van, and a day of collective action unfolded that captured national attention.
Built from firsthand footage and accounts from those who were there, EVERYBODY TO KENMURE STREET captures the urgency, emotion and solidarity of that day, documenting how ordinary people came together to stand against injustice.
Winner of the World Cinema Documentary Special Jury Award for Civil Resistance at Sundance Film Festival.

Tomorrow night at the Star & Shadow Cinema, enter the brutal world of Kim Jee woon’s I SAW THE DEVIL.
After his fiancée is murdered by a sadistic serial killer, intelligence agent Kim Soo hyeon sets out on a path of revenge that becomes increasingly savage and uncontrollable. What begins as a pursuit soon turns into a horrifying cycle of violence, as hunter and hunted push each other further into darkness.
Starring Choi Min sik and Lee Byung hun, I SAW THE DEVIL is a vicious, nerve shredding thriller that refuses easy catharsis. Blending shocking violence with psychological intensity, the film remains one of the most uncompromising and unforgettable works of modern Korean cinema.

📍@starandshadow Newcastle upon Tyne
🗓 Saturday 23rd May
⏰️ 2pm - 4.30pm
'Ho Chung Tetralogy' includes the interactive web piece All About My Ho Chung, the short film The Life and Times of Ho Chung Village, the feature film Big Blue Lake, and the director’s first feature-length documentary Flowing Stories. Through depicting the recurrent reunions and partings of the villagers and the intimate details of their lives, the film examines issues about urban and rural development. Filmed on locations in Hong Kong and in various cities in France and UK, Flowing Stories is an ode to village life and a journey in search of Hong Kongers’ collective roots. Tsang’s camera records the beautiful scenery and time-honored customs of the local village, as well as a once-a-decade village festival, which serves as a continuation of a tradition passed down through generations and a testament of family bonding. Today, Hong Kong citizens are confused about the future, the director hopes to review the village’s development in order to search for the meaning of home and diaspora through this meaningful local documentary.
