What is Kathryn most looking forward to about the upcoming album?
I’m excited that for our first album we are working with a record label. New Focus Recordings is an artist-based New York label, and I’m looking forward to having our music in their catalog.

Join us for our 8th Year Gala on Saturday, May 30th at 7:30pm at Tenri Cultural Institute in Manhattan!

Yunmeng Su’s “Azou” was written in memory of someone meaningful to the composer. The title comes from Zou, a Chinese euphemism for death, capturing both the feeling of saying goodbye and holding on to the memories.

This recent clip is from our residency at the University of Florida in Gainesville, FL where we worked with the composition studio! Full vid on YouTube, link in bio! @uf.composition

“Untitled Premiere” by Rafael Abdalla is composed of two small movements inspired by the rhythmic Etude Number 1 from the Brazilian educator and teacher Jose Eduardo Gramani. Gramani published a book of rhythmic studies on motor coordination and the expansion of rhythmic patterns.

Yimian Mi’s “West Gate” was inspired by the migration of Han Chinese people from northern China, particularly Shanxi, to minority areas beyond the Great Wall during the late Qing Dynasty. The piece centers on the Shanxi folk song “Going West” and incorporates regional rhythmic and melodic elements of Jin Opera, specifically the crossing-the-gate motif. West Gate expresses the sorrow of an inevitable departure.

🎶Snapshots and Serenades, Sputter Box’s debut album 🎶

Out September 18 on New Focus Recordings

We’re so excited to share this music with you. This album has been a long time in the making, growing out of years of collaboration and exploration.

Some of these pieces were written in collaboration with us, others we’ve grown with over time, but all of them have become part of our sound. Snapshots and Serenades moves through shifting textures, storytelling, and moments that feel almost fragile alongside ones that are a little unhinged.

To our artistic collaborators, thank you for music that challenges and excites us: Martha Callison Horst, Allison McIntosh, Filippo Scaramucci, Daijana Wallace & Kakia Gkoudina, Bethany Younge, and Brendan Sweeney.

And to Mike Tierney, for capturing all of it with such care and expertise, thank you!

So much more soon, so excited to share! Link in bioooo!
