We are pleased to announce the appointment of #SannaAlmajedi, performance curator at e-flux and co-curator of the 13th Seoul Mediacity Biennale, #SofiaThiệuDAmico and #EvaMayhabalDavis, both co-directors at Transmitter, and #AnnaKhimasia, an independent curator and co-founder of International Arrivals, to co-curate the third edition of The Immigrant Artist Biennial to be held in October-November 2026. 

The biennial will have a programmatic framework presenting screenings, panels, talks, performances, and other forms of programming that encourage dialogue and connection.

The four curators were selected in recognition of their scholarly and professional expertise in curating, as well as their demonstrated leadership within artistic communities and sustained commitment to immigrant artists.

On the curatorial process, Khimasia comments: “I am genuinely excited to work alongside the other curators, whose distinct perspectives and approaches offer intersecting lenses on art, migration, and community. The opportunity to build this exhibition collectively—through dialogue, care, and shared commitment—is especially meaningful to me.”

We are also pleased to announce our first partnership with an academic institution: John Jay College of Criminal Justice (CUNY)'s The Anya and Andrew Shiva Gallery reflecting TIAB’s recognition of the value of deeper and sustained engagement with academia in advancing the project’s curatorial and pedagogical objectives.

“Return Flight: Diasporic Artists on Presenting Work in the ‘Motherland,’” will focus on each of the speaker's recent experiences of showcasing work in their ancestral homes. The evening will highlight their projects as well as the experiences of working as both an insider and outsider (or perhaps a third, different thing altogether), and the complexity of this type of “return.” A culminating conversation will be moderated by our Director of Programs, Collections, and Exhibitions, Claire Kim.⁠

With the text and exhibition 'Operation Ghost Story', the next chapter of Thái Hà’s creative narrative, my desire was to weave together multiple references into a hybridized tale that encourages exploration both within and outside of the show. It is a small part of what I hope is a much longer research inquiry. Recently I have been thinking quite deeply about Operation Wandering Soul: a psychological war tactic utilized by US forces during the war—largely unsuccessfully—in which helicopters projected “Ghost Tape” recordings, pretending to be the ghosts of fallen Vietnamese soldiers. Since discovering it, I have been interested in the overlap of the paramilitary and the supernatural: two forces seemingly entirely at odds, but which come together in specific historical contexts. This intersection is also enacted through the practice of spiritual mediums used to locate the remains of soldiers, for example, or votive paper clothing in the shapes of military uniforms. Last summer @danni_sh and I had the good fortune of attending @on_topo — a weekend temple stay founded by @j0nsant0s at Bak Lim Sa Temple in the Catskill Mountains where artists and creative practitioners convened and shared work. I’m excited to be a part of the magic again as an organizer of this year’s iteration, “Sensory Cultivation,” from June 7-8th, with an amazing cohort of participating artists whose practices I deeply admire, contributing experimental, durational, and site-based workshops, performances, and happenings 🌀⁣⁣

Responding to this year’s curatorial theme of “East Meets West” by channeling the writing of Trinh T. Minh-ha, this presentation of work emphasizes the instability of geographic, ethnic, and nationalist categories, challenging traditional notions of “East” or “Asian,” especially proposing expansive definitions inclusive of Southeast and Southwest Asia. Through porous, diaphanous, and textile-driven works that center the human body and its relationships to physical, external environments, these works embrace the overhang or the excess material that evades neat dichotomies and dualisms, implicit in the endless attempts to separate humanity from one another: leaks and slippages will always continue 💧
