Born from one of the most iconic visual symbols of the 20th century, the Smiley is expanding into coffee, and opening doors to Smiley Coffee. A concept store based in Lower East Side, it does more than evoke history; it reawakens it. At its heart lies the original 1972 Smiley, first printed in France-Soir, a simple yellow mark used to spotlight moments of good news. This emblem came before the commercial iterations that would later follow, and unlike those modern renditions, it was never conceived as a logo. It was an editorial gesture. A cultural footnote. A quiet emblem of human optimism, rooted in the original Heritage Smiley — the very one introduced by French journalist Franklin Loufrani in 1972. Softly opening this weekend, Smiley Coffee seeks to return to the symbol’s authentic spirit: to celebrate joy, amplify uplifting stories, and foster connection through shared moments.

YUZU ESPRESSO BOMB 🍋
A fun twist on the Smiley® Yuzuco® Espresso Tonic

Save this recipe for your newest afternoon pick me up! 😃⤵️
Yuzu Syrup Ingredients (yields 1oz)
-13g Sugar
-13g Water
-2.5g Yuzuco Super Juice

Espresso Tonic Ingredients
-2x Smiley Ludlow Espresso
-1oz + 1tsp Yuzuco Super Juice
-1oz Yuzuco Syrup
-8oz Tonic Water
-Candied Yuzuco Yuzu Peel (1-2 pieces)
-Dash of salt

Yuzu Syrup Method
1. Heat sugar and water until dissolved
2. Add yuzu juice and cool completely

Espresso Tonic Method
1. Measure out 1oz of yuzu juice and 1oz yuzu syrup and pour into cup
2. Add 5oz of tonic water into cup
3. Pull 2x espresso shot
4. Pour 1tsp of yuzu juice into a small platter
5. Put a dash of salt onto a separate platter
6. Dip the bottom of the espresso shot glass into the yuzu juice platter and then the salt platter
7. Drop espresso shot into cup
8. Top it off with candied yuzu peels
