We’re super excited to be back at Bass Coast this summer. So many key memories link back to this festival and the community that makes it what it is.

Back in 2006, @cosmobaker, @djeleven, and @ayreswoodworking rolled through @hificlub in Calgary and basically said to @smalltowndjs, “Yo… you guys should come to NYC and play @itstherub sometime.”
That one invite cracked the door open to a whole circuit of parties from that era. Next thing you know they’re playing Baltimore’s Taxlo, LA with @themjeans, San Francisco with @vinsol… soon to become known as the Y2K North American Party Circuit!
Back then, everybody would meet up once a year at SXSW, and it felt like a summer camp for DJs back then, the one place where this whole little North American nightlife family got to be in the same place at the same time.

This week on Roxy’s Tales, I’m joined by @smalltownpete and @grimes_mike of @smalltowndjs. In the Y2K era, the duo doublehandedly put Calgary, Alberta, on the North American & independent global dance music map by opening the legendary @hificlub in 2005.
HiFi wasn’t just a nightclub; it became a gateway for underground music in North America, bringing international DJs and artists through Calgary while connecting Canadian scenes with the wider global dance community. Through their work as DJs, promoters, and cultural builders, Smalltown DJs helped create a pathway for music to travel across Canada and into the U.S., becoming a large and influential pulse that shaped a vital part of the Y2K nightlife ecosystem for 15 years. Pete and Mike share stories from the rise of the Y2K dance scene, the artists who came through their doors, and how community-driven nightlife helped build a global network of music and culture.
I’m extremely honored to have both Smalltown DJs on the podcast to tell the HiFi story from their eyes and reflect on an era that helped define the modern underground music scene.
