On June 24, the @naacp inducted four legendary Spartans into its Legacy Hall of Fame in recognition of their groundbreaking work as civil rights advocates: Olympic Project for Human Rights co-founders Dr. Harry Edwards, ’64 Social Science, ’16 Honorary Doctorate, and Ken Noel, ’66 BA, ’68 MA, Social Science; and Olympians Tommie Smith, ’69 Social Science, ’05 Honorary Doctorate, and John Carlos, ’05 Honorary Doctorate.

“This recognition is for all those athletes who have turned their athletic stages into platforms to advocate for that more perfect union,” says Edwards, professor emeritus of UC Berkeley and author of “The Revolt of the Black Athlete,” the seminal sports sociology text.

Monique Howe’s journey reflects the very best of what higher education can make possible.

As a first-generation student, she navigated financial hardship, personal responsibility, and the demands of graduate school while pursuing her passion for mathematics at San José State University. This year, she graduates with her master’s degree and will continue her academic journey in a PhD program at UC Santa Cruz.

Achievements like this are never earned alone. They are built through perseverance, support systems, mentorship and institutions willing to invest in student potential.

Congratulations to Monique on this remarkable milestone, and recognition to SJSU for continuing to empower students to lead, excel and redefine what is possible for future generations.
