Silver Space provides a settled base for a select number of talented and ambitious silversmiths. The Fellowship offers time, space, support and a reduction in financial pressure, enabling Fellows to build a body of work and focus on their business. Fellows are based at their own dedicated bench in Silver Space.

Silver Space is the northern hub for contemporary silversmithing where knowledge and skills are valued and where silversmiths can forge the networks they need to thrive. Makers have access to a fully-equipped silversmithing facility that can accommodate up to 10, through, Silver Fellowships, bench hire and skills training workshops.

This week our Workshop Manager, Charlotte, installed the new bandsaw with a lot of effort, patience, and a little 'workshop specific' language 🤭

Our beloved Wadkin bandsaw, built around the jurassic era, was decommissioned last year after failing it's annual service. But has been given a cosy retirement in one of our fellow @yartspace resident's studio.

You might be wondering what place a bandsaw has in a metalwork workshop! There is often the need to chop down wood for making tooling, jigs, display props, presentation & shipping boxes, or even components such as handles, knops & feet for finished silverware pieces.

I have new work to share!
This year, I'm working on making my patterns and pieces a bit more complex. This piece’s skeleton shape weaves a hand-drawn Keltic knot-inspired pattern into a perfect little vase.

We're gearing up to host the first Contemporary British Silversmiths training course of 2026 on Monday 23rd February.

Renowned chaser Rod Smart will be leading a 3 day chasing & repousee masterclass, and our Workshop Manager, Charlotte has been busy behind the scenes getting everything ready for the 6 budding participants.

You may know that alongside our own extensive tool collection we also house the CBS's tool collection, and one of the biggest (and dirtiest) jobs Charlotte has been doing is restoring the pitch bowls from both collections, ready to be filled with new pitch on Monday.

This has involved chipping out the old brittle pitch, treating the rust and giving them a new lick of paint, and getting smart new leather collars made for bowls to sit on.

Rachel Ruiyi Wang is a Shanghainese artist and maker based in the UK. Her artistic practice is characterised by innovation, humour, and a profound fascination with everyday objects.
Rachel has recently joint Silver Fellowship at Yorkshire Artspace. Before moving to Sheffield, she finished a year of silversmith training at Bishopsland and received the South House Trust Scholarship. Motivated by a persistent interest in applied art, she completed her BA in Jewellery Design at Central Saint Martins and MA in Jewellery and Metal at the Royal College of Art. Her experiences also include exhibiting her contemporary artwork in London, Chicago, Porto, Munich, etc.

Isabella Anne Kelley is a Yorkshire based silversmith. Born in Bradford, she now holds one of our benches in silverspace. You often find her with headphones on sawing away at a new lattice peice inspired by architecture from throughout history or hammering away at a stake .

Sheffield silversmith, Charlotte Tollyfield, has been based at Yorkshire Artspace’s Persistence Works building since 2008, and set up her own studio on the floor above Silver Space in 2011.
Charlotte’s own work draws on her fascination with geometric form and symmetry, focusing on composition and structure whilst preserving a strong sense of function and purpose.
Charlotte is also our Workshop Manager, and you can find her in Silver Space at various points in the week maintaining the machines, building tool storage and restoring tools, or just generally on the hunt for a free chocolate biscuit (or 6) and a chat.
