Creating pieces to commission for both private and corporate clients allows me to explore different design avenues, and expand my making  process - helping to drive my silversmithing practice forward.

I have had the pleasure of creating a number of commissions ranging from Christening gifts, to trophies, commemorative and ceremonial pieces, to unique tableware and conversation pieces for the home.

With each commission it's always fascinating to discover what it is people want from an object; what they want it to represent and communicate, and how they envisage using it, and the life that object will have.

• The Company of Cutlers in Hallamshire, Year Piece for the Centenary of Stainless Steel in 2013 - Sterling silver & stainless steel
• St. Philips Church of Leicester, Commemorative Altar Candle Plate, 2014 - Silver plated copper
• Napkin Holders, private commission for the Christmas dining table, 2014 - Sterling silver
• The William Hill St. Leger Stakes Winner's Trophy, 2018 - Sterling silver with gilded details
• Fleur's Christening Cup, private commission, 2020 - Sterling silver with gilded interior
• The Worshipful Company of Barbers, Barber Emeritus Goblets, 2021 - Sterling silver with gilded and oxidised details
• The Tattersall Jug, private commission & posthumous collaboration celebrating the life & work of the client's husband, 2022 - Sterling silver
• The Terry Gadsby Trophy, semi-private commission celebrating the life of a dedicated member of the Trent rowing community, 2023 - Sterling silver & English oak
• The Winetaster, private commission, 2025 - Sterling silver

I am Charlotte Tollyfield, silversmith and designer. A one woman business based in Sheffield, UK; I registered as a self-employed professional silversmith in January 2008 whilst completing a postgraduate year at Bishopsland Educational Trust (an incubation programme for early career silversmiths & jewellers in South Oxfordshire).

My brand logo is based on my hallmark, or Sponsor's punch, that is used to literally brand every piece that I make - consisting of an elliptical shield, with the end points inverted, enclosing my initials CRT in Arial font. Originally registered with the London Assay Office when at university at Buckinghamshire Chiltern University College in High Wycombe, my mark has been registered with Sheffield Assay Office since returning home in September 2008.

There are two distinct parts to Charlotte Tollyfield Contemporary Bespoke Silverware -
The Workshop: a world of activity, industry, and noise (the beating of the hammer, the roar of the blowtorch, the rasping of the file). It takes energy, sweat, and concentration to move metal.
The Showcase: this is a world where bright lights make polished silver glitter. A place to demonstrate the understated elegance and quiet luxury of simple, beautiful, functional silverware; to communicate the feeling of silver in the hand.

Where to find me...

Most days I'm in my studio workshop at Yorkshire Artspace's Persistence Works building, in the centre of Sheffield. If you'd like to visit to discuss a commission, please do get in contact to arrange an appointment.

Every 3rd weekend in November we have our Open Studios, a free event when all are welcome to come and see behind the scenes in lots of different studios, ask questions and have a chat with makers and artists, view demonstrations, and purchase work.

I also have a website, charlottetollyfield.co.uk which you can find in the link in my bio. I do my best to keep this updated with recent work, events, and classes.

You can also find me, from time to time, at a fair or exhibition. One's I have done regularly are Goldsmiths' Fair in London, and Goldsmiths North here in Sheffield, but I have also exhibited in Edinburgh, Salisbury, Nottinghamshire, Wisely and many other places over the years. So keep an eye on my website and socials, or join my mailing list to be the first to know.

I look forward to meeting you!

A frequently asked question I regularly encounter is more often expressed as a statement - "The problem is, I'd have to clean it."

News Flash! Everything has to be cleaned; from ourselves, to our homes, pets, and vehicles. And the easiest way to prevent silver from going black, is to use it. The natural oils and acids in your skin prevent the build up of tarnish, plus you're probably going to give it a quick rinse and pat dry after most uses, and that's really all it needs.

However, if you want to give your silverware a bit of a buff, or the need arises to give it a proper clean, here's your kit list:
• Silver Cloth
• Silver foam/paste
• Washing up liquid
• Soft, clean cloth - eg. Microfiber cloth or soft yellow duster
All available from larger supermarkets, and places like John Lewis. The best brands to look out for are Town Talk, Haggerty, and Goddard.

Top Tips:
• Take your rings, and any dangly bracelets off so they don't scrape across your silverware
• ALWAYS go a circular motion - with a cloth, with a sponge, with your hand
• Apply firm pressure, but don't ever be tempted to scrub
• If you've used silver foam/paste or polish on something you eat or drink with, rinse the piece in warn water with a bit of washing up liquid, then dry
• Avoid handling silver when eating greasy, salty finger food, unless you plan to wash it soon afterwards. Salt will not only turn the silver black, but it also etches into the surface of the silver and may give you permanent finger print marks if left for too long

📽 This little Reel demonstrates me cleaning one of my whisky tumblers, with silver paste, that recently returned from a gallery after being sat in a cabinet for months.

If cleaning silver still sounds like too much of a faff, you could always get your butler to do it 😉

Today I'm revisiting the work I made during my year @bishopsland_educational_trust from 2007 to 2008.

This is where I really feel I found my 'style' as it were; the starting point for the work I make today.

I spent the first couple of months playing around with papier-mache models, and then began to translate the forms into silver using press-forming.

It's been a long time since last saw the photographs I took of the pieces whilst at Bishopsland, and I'm quite enjoying the moody tones of the gradient background. I've also interspersed the photos of the same pieces, on a more contemporary white background, taken a couple of years later by Keith Leighton for my application to @goldsmithsfair

I have to admit, I'm not very good at documenting the making process. I get too wrapped up in what I'm doing, and use it as an excuse to stay away from my phone.

Which means, when I do remember to take pictures along the way, it's usually because I'm working on a special project.

Here are a few shots from when I made my Chocolate Pot back in 2021 during my month long scholarship with @brettpaynesilversmith as part of the South House Silver Trust scheme.

The whole thing took 2 weeks to complete (excluding cleaning up, hallmarking & polishing). Techniques and processes included in it's creation were - raising, forging, spinning (curtesy of @davidallison1889), lathe tuning, filing, forming and soldering.

One of the greatest challenges, particularly in the commissioning process, is communicating ideas effectively.

The generation and presentation of designs can take a great deal of time and effort, and as many commission opportunities are competitive, this is work that can often go un-paid. So it is always a great sense of achievement to discover your vision of a brief has won over the client.

You win some, you lose some. It's all part of the job.

The devil is in the details when it comes to designing commission pieces. Clients are looking for something unique - an original or adapted design exclusive to them and/or their organisation; something personal - reflective of their tastes, interests, and style; something symbolic - representing an occasion or moment in time, celebrating someone's memory and legacy, or acknowledging the history of an institution.

It is always important for me to gain an understanding of some or all of these points when beginning the design process for a commission, to provide avenues of research and drive inspiration.

A simple post for today's @marchmeetthemaker prompt.

I am currently working on a private commission that is due to be a very special gift for someone. This is the silver that arrived from @argexsilver last week and which I am currently transforming into something unique.

The piece is due to be delivered in May, so keep your eyes on my feed and I will reveal more once it's been presented to the lucky recipient.

A little re-shoot of a Reel I made last year, featuring the tea caddy I made for my Final Major Project whilst completing a BTEC Diploma in Foundation Studies: Art & Design (aka 18+ Foundation) @sheffcol 2003-04.

It took until I was 19 for me to discover metalwork and silversmithing, but once I found my medium, I was determined to take it as far as I could.

I have been immersed in the study of art and design since the age of 16, having always been drawn to creative subjects and choosing to ditch traditional A-Levels for a full time, vocational art course.

At the end of that summer I left Sheffield for High Wycombe to do my BA(hons) degree in Designed Metalwork & Jewellery @bnuni_ then known as Buckinghamshire Chilterns University College (BCUC), before completing a year @bishopsland_educational_trust and returning to Sheffield in August 2008.

This has never been a hobby or a side-hustle.
It is my chosen career.
