I know I have posted this before - well, here it is again. This was to be the last image of The Simpsons Christmas Special, a photo freeze akin to the Simpsons Short "Family Portrait" (aired 3/6/88, MG25). I include that image here to compare. However - it was decided NOT to use that as the ending. And - however again - it WAS decided to use the Family Portrait version for the publicity ad in the TV Guide. Go - - figure - - !

Many of you knew that yesterday was the 36th anniversary of the airing of The Simpsons Christmas Special. But - Did You Know - that today is the 37th anniversary of Simpson Xmas? Airing on The Tracey Ullman Show on Dec 18, 1988 - almost to day a year earlier than the Special. This short (animated by Wes Archer @rcher_arts and myself & ofc written by Matt Groening) features Bart narrating a parody of Twas the Night Before Christmas. At the time I don’t think any of us imagined what would happen a year later. Here is a cel step up, clean drawing of the kids running, and a rough for the lighting on Bart. This is labeled production number MG40. We did 8 more shorts following this one.

36 years ago? Well - seems that's how the math adds up. Ok so it was Dec. 17, 1989 that the very first Simpsons episode aired, what became The Simpsons Christmas Special (aka "Simpsons Roasting on an Open Fire") although it was originally 7G08, to be the eighth episode of the first season. Written by Mimi Ponds and directed by yours truly, it was in fact the 3rd ep I had directed by then. But - it all worked out, right? Just as the fates allowed . . .
