WEDNESDAY 22nd 7pm

SHORTIES held a ROMCOM Writing course at the start of the year headed by our Development Producer Tian-Mei Lee. 10 fem writers were selected to take part in a romcom boot camp if you will - writing 10 pages per week and reflecting and shaping their ideas with one another throughout.

We selected our top 3 scripts and we have a wonderful cast of talented actors bringing the scripts to life - supported by our SHORTIES Casting Director Nina Kissaun.

You’ll sit in the auditorium at The RSA and witness script in hand performances of a section of each script. There will be a vote for your fave ROMCOM and the winning writer will win £100 cash prize!

Get involved, get your finger on the creative pulse and come and have a laugh whilst supporting up and coming female talent.

It was a pleasure sitting and watching films by @_lil_boobies and @abitimminsdop , @beevrowland and Lois Tallulah Platt. The post film discussion was fascinating but also beautifully supportive. Focused on reflecting on experience, and lessons hard learnt but easily shared. 

We were honoured to then be joined afterwards by @mayorofwy. Today's films and the conversation about Mayor Brabin's Just Don't campaign made space for recognition of the urgent challenges still being dealt with around the many types of harassment and abuse women and girls experience day to day. 

However, the room filled often with warmth and laughter and the recurring theme in the conversation was how much can be achieved when we work together. Whether that's hosting events like the one today aimed at helping women and non-binary people in the industry to connect, or finding mentors and creative collaborators in different forms and then working together to test and learn and most importantly to make! 

We have to make space to talk about the hard things but if the conversation can happen in a safe space with good people then great things become possible. 

Happy International Women's Day everyone!

We’re so excited to welcome Beth Rowland - a powerhouse film maker to our event this SUNDAY at Hyde Park Picturehouse 1pm

Beth is a self-taught writer and director member of BAFTA Connect and Directors UK, and an alumni of Warner Brothers x Waterloo Road (2025), Screen Yorkshire’s ‘FLEX’ (2021-22), and BFI ‘Scratch Me’ (2020-21).

In 2018, she was mentored by director Shane Meadows through making a film a month for 12 months, Shane later became Executive Producer for her BFI-backed short film ‘Bury the Dogs’. The film premiered internationally at Clermont Ferrand in 2024. Produced by BAFTA-nominated Hollie Bryan (Cosmosquare Films) and Diva Rodriguez, it has been screened at BAFTA and BIFA qualifying festivals, including Norwich and Bolton, where it was nominated for Best Made Up North.
