Step Inside a Mid-Century Modern Home by Davidov Architects
At LDS II Residence, the starting point wasn't a blank slate — it was two adjacent houses, each carrying its own history, and the question of how to bring them gracefully together.
Davidov Architects identified existing elements worth honouring: oak parquetry floors, honed Juparana granite, a timber-lined staircase, and brass hardware with its own quiet patina. Where materials could not be matched, blended pink and red marbles in a gridded Palladiana pattern step in; where natural light could not reach, wall-to-wall illuminated stretch ceilings dissolve formerly dark interiors into calm, evenly-lit environments.

Behind The Scenes | Clontarf House by Mathieson Architects
For some, a stroll along Sydney’s Northern Beaches is enough to imagine waking up to rock pools, surf breaks and the soft lapping of water each morning. For others, it’s a reality. Sitting at the point where the Northern Beaches meet the North Shore is Clontarf, a quiet, tranquil suburb that is more alive with family beach days than the bustle of the CBD.
"The home sits at the bottom of a natural slope, just before the water, and has a very close relationship to the waterfront. We wanted to capture a real intimacy between the internal living spaces and the harbour.” – Phillip Mathieson, head architect and founder of New South Wales-based Mathieson Architects

Site orientation posed a challenge, with west-facing glazing requiring careful design to balance natural light, shading, and privacy. The facade was conceived as a series of shrouds infilled with glazing, providing adaptability across bedrooms, bathrooms, and living zones.
