Reusable cups are moving beyond venues β€” and into the streets of San Francisco.

At Downtown First Thursdays, we helped launch the city’s first reusable, returnable cup program for a street event.

At an event that brought 9,000 people downtown, the idea was simple:

Use the cup.
Return the cup.
Wash it.
Use it again.

That’s how reuse becomes normal.

Good for downtown.
Good for small businesses.
Good for the environment.

Thank you to ABC7 News Bay Area for covering this milestone.

And grateful to Katy, Downtown First Thursdays, Into The Streets SF, RWorld, Scott Rowitz Yerba Buena Partnership, The East Cut Community Benefit District, our wonderful small business partners, and the SFE Zero Waste team for helping bring this to life.

Thank you, San Francisco, for helping us advance climate protection for the past 30 years! And we're just getting started.

Earth Month was a reminder of who we do this work for and why it matters. We remain committed to continue advocating for a healthier city, protecting local ecosystems, and supporting public health.

How do you imagine life in San Francisco after 30 years of climate progress?

City Gurlz Hike teamed up with @sfenvironment for a special Earth Month Bioblitz as part of the #citynaturechallenge 🌍 Together we documented hundreds of observations in a neighborhood in San Francisco that has been historically under documented. πŸ”πŸ¦‹ Thanks to the SF environment team for inviting us and sharing their knowledge about the native biodiversity in the area. 🌱 Remember that you can be naturalist and document the biodiversity in your neighborhood on iNat! #sfclimateweek

Giving clothes a second life > sending them to landfill ♻️

Inspiring creativity and caring for the planet by giving new life to materials once considered waste. At @scrapsf they help people of all ages transform everyday objects into projects that fuel the spirit, strengthen community, and spark environmental awareness.

We loved seeing the community come together at the fix-it clinic with @scrapsf and @sfenvironment 🌱

Repair, reuse, repeat.

In 1995, San Francisco chose to build something different.

Today, we see those choices in a greener, more sustainable cityβ€”one that continues to inspire others around the world.

Now, we’re pushing the next wave of climate action and resilience.

This is 30 years of the San Francisco Environment Department and we’re just getting started.
