“So Late In The Day opens with an unremarkable man, Cathal, on a seemingly uneventful day in Dublin, Friday July 29th. But something is off. He’s distracted at work, his colleagues are being nice to him, he’s trying to avoid them.
We soon realise that this is not the day Cathal had planned. Small clues are dropped, the date being one of them: July 29th is the anniversary of the doomed marriage between Prince Charles and Lady Diana Spencer.
At the centre of the book is Cathal’s relationship with Sabine, his French girlfriend. With her trademark precision, Claire slowly reveals the small cuts Cathal unthinkingly delivers to their future together. He lacks a generosity of spirit. He makes mental notes about women’s weight. He kills every potentially romantic moment.
Cathal is no monster. You won’t find him lurking in the manosphere, and that’s exactly the point. His is a more mundane form of inherited misogyny that sucks the joy out of his relationship with Sabine and ultimately diminishes him too.
I read So Late In The Day as a kind of parable about lazy misogyny. It’s a lesson in whatyou risk losing if you can’t bring yourself to change. Claire delivers this without melodrama or judgment and with endless grace. You’ll want to read this book at least twice to see how she does it.”

“For a long time, I believed I did not exist…”
We Others is on view at The Photographers’ Gallery, London until 7 June. Bringing together the archival photographs of Donna Gottschalk’s queer life in 1970s New York with Hélène Giannecchini’s autobiographical texts on memory, lineage and chosen kinship, We Others reflects on visibility, remembrance and the power of seeing, and being seen, by one another.
“Knowing my own family was never enough for me. I had a need for other affiliations… affiliations that had nothing to do with blood,” writes Giannecchini. What Gottschalk captures through the lens, Giannecchini traces through language. Together, their works map powerful histories of queer love and resistance across generations.
Catch it while you still can at @thephotographersgallery.

‘There really isn’t anything quite like a book to understand the perspective of others and translated fiction takes that even further. I guess it’s the fusion of an experience that is so universal and at the same time so unique. It’s the antidote to othering.’
Watch @dualipa’s opening speech from the International Booker Prize 10th anniversary event, a special celebration that marked a decade of the prize.
“It ruined things for men as well as women."
If you're interested in books that explore gender, inheritance and the behaviours we learn without even realising, don't miss @dualipa and Claire Keegan's conversation about So Late In The Day, which is Dua's #MonthlyRead for May.
While discussing Cathal, the quietly frustrating protagonist of So Late In The Day – whose inherited misogyny sucks the joy out of his relationship – Dua and Claire talk about the way misogyny in Ireland and ultimately diminishes men as well as women.

Meet this week’s Sunday List curator @lydia_pang_.
Author, entrepreneur, new mum, and self-described ageing goth, Lydia is currently living amongst the misty forests of Wales – writing, cooking, foraging for mushrooms, and embracing the muddy, magical corners of everyday life.
Her new book, Eat Bitter: A Story About Guts and Food (out 14 May and available to pre-order now!), explores the relationship between food, identity, healing, and heritage with the same potent, honest, and unapologetic voice that’s earned her a devoted following online.
Whatever you're into, be it slurping on bone broth or “ugly but sexy” custom cakes, there's a little something in her recs for everyone...

Whatever you're into, be it slurping on bone broth or “ugly but sexy” custom cakes, there's a little something in her recs for everyone...

This week was a big one for Service95 — we hosted the first edition of Dinner Service, and wow was it special <3
The idea behind it is simple: culture tastes better together. Instead of scrolling alone, we wanted to bring the stories from the Service95 newsletter away from the screen and onto the table.
Our first theme, Art & Expression: Made By Hand, was brought to life by three incredible creative contributors: @lucyjmahon, @_melissaflowers and @eatethio. And hosted together with the amazing team at @crispin_london at @studiovoltairelondon.
Thank you to everyone who came and made it so memorable. We loved slowing down, swapping recommendations and savouring culture and creativity with you. More to come soon✨

Now playing... @eatethio’s ‘Songs To Soundtrack Your Next Gathering’.
For the first edition of Service95’s supper club concept, #DinnerService, we turned to creative studio Eat Ethio to curate the soundtrack.
“We chose these songs from the perspective of how they make us feel energetically, while considering the flow of the evening and its themes of making, expression, and creativity,” says founders Helina Tesega and Scott Albon. “Much of the selection draws from Ethiopian jazz and sounds inspired by it, alongside music from neighbouring regions and spiritual traditions that awaken something deeper within the listener.”
Head to Service95’s spotify to download the full playlist. We hope you enjoy it as much as our Dinner Service guests did...
