For this year's Valentine's Day episode, we are getting up close and personal with those most beloved of birds - penguins. Giving us an insight into the love lives of our feathered friends are penguinologists (yes, that's a real word) Dr Ignacio Juarez Martinez and Dr Fiona Suttle, who have spent multiple field seasons in Antarctica monitoring penguin breeding behaviour. It’s World Penguin Day! 🐧 Today, we’re celebrating the incredible work of our partners at Seabird Watch (University of Oxford) and their Penguin Watch citizen science project.

This past Antarctic season, two of their teams joined us on five voyages, deploying time-lapse cameras, conducting drone surveys, and collecting guano and feather samples at penguin colonies across the region.

Their mission? To better understand how climate change, krill fishing, and avian flu impact these vulnerable birds throughout the year.

This past Antarctic season, two of their teams joined us on five voyages, deploying time-lapse cameras, conducting drone surveys, and collecting guano and feather samples at penguin colonies across the region.

Their mission? To better understand how climate change, krill fishing, and avian flu impact these vulnerable birds throughout the year.

Some of #Montserrat's seabirds are nocturnal so we headed to a site called Rendezvous Bluff in the middle of the night to try and spot Audubon's #Shearwaters nest using the thermal #drone.

The cliffs where they likely nest become very hot during the day so our best bet to spot them using thermal imagery is just before sunrise when the rocks have had time to cool through the night.

Now for data processing but it's promising and Ajhermae and Teddy, our local partners are drone rockstars. More soon!

Meet Hellen! She's a female tropicbird nesting at Hell's Gate, on Montserrat Island. We've deployed, with our partners at the Department of the Environment, the very first Montserrat Seabird Watch camera overlooking Hellen's nest.

We're here learning about our partners' monitoring methods and helping them to deploy cameras to boost monitoring while reducing the pressure on staff. Together, we aim to better understand local seabird nesting behaviour, population trends and their threats, like predation by invasive species (e.g., rats, cats).

Montserrat's seabird population and ecosystem are still recovering from volcanic eruption and a better understanding of the species will help the government boost their recovery.

This work is kindly funded by the @biodiversitychallengefunds (project DPLUS174).
