Now that Robert Mondavi Winery is open once again for tastings, we are happy to share a few photos of the renovation by @marionbrenner. Our collaboration with aidlindarlingdesign was all about engaging with the surrounding landscape of the Napa Valley and the Mayacamas. Through the site grading and the terracing of the architecture, we wanted to stretch the habitat of the native oak savanna and enhance the experience of being on the valley floor. Guided by a philosophy of seasonal beauty and environmental stewardship, Native 𝘘𝘶𝘦𝘳𝘤𝘶𝘴 𝘢𝘨𝘳𝘪𝘧𝘰𝘭𝘪𝘢(Coast Live Oak) and 𝘘𝘶𝘦𝘳𝘤𝘶𝘴 𝘭𝘰𝘣𝘢𝘵𝘢 (Valley Oak) trees provide structure to the gardens while reestablishing keystone species in the native oak savanna ecotone. The understory plant palette feels like a natural extension of the Napa Valley’s dry grasslands and wildflower meadows. Species like California Poppy (𝘌𝘴𝘤𝘩𝘴𝘤𝘩𝘰𝘭𝘻𝘪𝘢 𝘤𝘢𝘭𝘪𝘧𝘰𝘳𝘯𝘪𝘤𝘢 ‘Apricot Chiffon’), Matilija Poppy (𝘙𝘰𝘮𝘯𝘦𝘺𝘢 𝘤𝘰𝘶𝘭𝘵𝘦𝘳𝘪), and Yarrow (𝘈𝘤𝘩𝘪𝘭𝘭𝘦𝘢) provide seasonal waves of color, while structural plants such as 𝘗𝘦𝘯𝘯𝘪𝘴𝘦𝘵𝘶𝘮 𝘴𝘱𝘢𝘵𝘩𝘪𝘰𝘭𝘢𝘵𝘶𝘮 and 𝘔𝘶𝘩𝘭𝘦𝘯𝘣𝘦𝘳𝘨𝘪𝘢 𝘳𝘪𝘨𝘦𝘯𝘴 give the composition year-round form and movement.

Clos du Val has been selected as a finalist for the inaugural 2026 Excellence in Landscape Award by the @createurs_design_awards. 
 
Nestled in the heart of California’s Napa Valley wine country, Clos du Val is situated along the Silverado Trail—the first permanent road connecting Napa to Calistoga.
 
The legacy of this storied site has been thoughtfully reimagined and transformed into an immersive garden layered with sensorial depth and complexity. A subtle informality weaves through the landscape, juxtaposing the winery’s refined and bold architecture. Fragrant perennials—sweet salvias, velvety lamb’s ears, and tufted plumes of grasses—introduce gentle movement and texture, evoking the quiet rhythm of a natural meadow.

Featured in today’s @sfchronicle, @rwyllie and @jamesalord1 reflect on rethinking California’s recent fires not solely as an environmental or social challenge, but as one of design.

Drawing on the idea that fire is both creator and destroyer, the article notes that perhaps it’s about “imagining the ways we can coexist with fire.” It encourages a shift from simply thinking about fire to imagining how—and in what ways—we might live and work alongside it in a rapidly evolving climate. This was the same idea behind the design studio we led this fall at @harvardgsd (more on that soon!).
