✨📚 Happy publication day to our May titles!

In JUDY BLUME: A LIFE Oppenheimer goes deep, exploring Blume’s middle-class 1940s upbringing, complicated childhood, varied relationships and marriages, unabashed sexual experiences, bouts of heartache and loss, and enduring legacy as a champion of free speech and contemporary literature. He pulls back the curtain to reveal the woman behind the literary empire in all her complex, multifaceted glory — a true gift for anyone who grew up reading and loving these extraordinary books.

SEXUAL PERSONAE by Camille Paglia is a blazing work of brilliant originality, a phenomenon ever since it was first published in 1990, Camille Paglia outlines a new unified theory of Western art and literature and the primacy of sex and violence within it. Identifying the competing symbolic forces of Apollo and Dionysus ― reason and instinct, order and chaos, logic and passion, male and female, civilisation and nature ― Sexual Personae outlines key archetypes that embody different levels of Apollonian and Dionysian forces and traces how these archetypes have animated the pagan battle that underlies all Western art and culture.

THE CREATURES’ GUIDE TO CARING is a compelling and entertaining study, where science journalist @by.elizabeth.preston explores the biology, brain circuitry, and behaviours we share with species across the animal kingdom that care for young. In the field and in the lab, readers will also meet scientists who have dedicated their lives to understanding these animals, often while juggling families of their own. Preston argues that Homo sapiens’ history of caring for children cooperatively has left a legacy in all of us, parents and non-parents alike, and is the basis for our caring human society.

🛍💔 In matters of love and money, once it’s gone, it’s gone — no returns, no exchanges.

RETURNS AND EXCHANGES by Kayla Rae Whitaker @kaylaraewhitaker

Baker-Taylor’s is a family business. Fran (née Baker) and Fred Taylor run a successful chain of discount retail stores in Kentucky and they’re cautiously expanding. Underneath the surface, however, the business is changing at a breakneck pace, and each family member is struggling to keep up.

Money is transforming Fred, and the extremes to which he will go to fit in with the high society crowd are embarrassing, if not downright dangerous. Meanwhile, Fran, her family’s stable core, is falling for Wendy, a cashier at Baker- Taylor’s, risking everything along the way.

A compelling saga that absorbs the reader into the life of a family in 70s and 80s America, Returns and Exchanges is Jonathan Franzen meets Patricia Highsmith’s The Price of Salt. Like the characters in her book, Whitaker comes from a working-class family in eastern Kentucky (Appalachia), a setting that’s underrepresented in mainstream fiction.

Coming on the 18th of June 2026

The Nights Are Quiet in Tehran by Shida Bazyar, translated from German by Ruth Martin, is one of those novels where the political and the personal are so deeply intertwined that it becomes impossible to separate the two. Spanning four decades, it follows an Iranian family from the 1979 revolution, through their forced exile in Germany, and into the lives of their children, who grow up with a distant and complicated connection to a country they barely know.
What lingers long after you finish the book is not just the sweep of history, but the quiet ways in which it reshapes people.

Behzad and Nahid begin as young revolutionaries, full of belief and urgency. They are deeply involved, emotionally and politically invested in the future they are fighting for. But over time, that certainty fades. Behzad, in particular, undergoes a painful transformation. He becomes consumed by guilt and memory, especially as he comes to terms with the execution of people he once stood beside. Nahid’s struggle is more internal, showing up in her isolation, her difficulty with language, and the slow withdrawal into herself.

Exile does not just change their surroundings. It changes who they are at their core.

Their children grow up in an entirely different world, and this is where the novel becomes especially layered. The distance between the generations is not marked by conflict, but by the absence of shared experience.

Laleh’s visit to Iran brings this into sharp focus. She is drawn to the sensory richness of the place, the food, the pace of life, the easy intimacy of conversations. For a while, she slips into it, adapting quickly and almost instinctively. But that sense of belonging is complicated. When she encounters people who have endured the realities her family escaped, she is confronted with a deep and unsettling sense of guilt. Her connection to Iran feels both real and incomplete at the same time.

🌼 🌸Philippa Laakso was many things to many people. And now, she was dead.

ENCHANTMENT by Riikka Pulkkinen is coming 18th of June 2026

When seventeen-year-old Philippa’s body is found in the yard outside her home, the police launch an investigation. Everyone close to her is questioned: The elderly neighbour who discovered her body, the best friend, who hoards secrets, the ex-boyfriend, still reeling from their sudden break-up and the woman who features, enraged, in some of the strange videos Philippa filmed or the older men she’d been meeting via a dating app.

Each tells a different story: she was a confidant, a fantasy, a temptation, a problem, a mystery, a mirror. But did any of them truly know her?

Enchantment is a spellbinding literary mystery that explores the uneasy terrain of girlhood, where one is always being watched, shaped, and judged by others. In it, Riikka Pulkkinen weaves a complex story of power, identity, and the fragile boundary between truth and fiction.

A very happy publication day to our April titles! The sun is shining in London and we have some fantastic new reads for the changing of the seasons.

THE ENDLING by Keely Jobe - On an isolated mountaintop, a small feminist community is fracturing under the weight of ideological divides and dwindling numbers when the community women begin mysteriously falling pregnant. When Mila gives birth to the only boy, their hardline separatist ideals face an impossible test. Vividly expressed, wildly funny, and wholly original, The Endling examines the volatile intersection of community and politics, exploring what happens when the borders we construct between species, between sexes, between self and world prove more porous than we imagine.

SELF-WORTH by Emma Tholozan (translated by Emma Ramadan) — Fresh from graduating with her master’s in philosophy, Anna is shocked when a career counsellor tells her she has ‘no special skills’. She might be making minimum wage, but at least she has her boyfriend Lulu, the love of her life, to come home to at night.

But one day Lulu starts throwing up cash — thousands of euros in just a few days — hurtling the twenty-something couple into unforeseen wealth. Having spent their lives proudly rejecting consumer society, they suddenly find themselves rich, and Anna is loving every minute of it.

In Self-Worth newcomer Emma Tholozan delivers a raw, brutally funny portrait of a generation without ideals.

BORN TO FLOURISH by Richard J Davidson and Cortland Dahl — For anyone who is overwhelmed, stressed, or lonely in today’s world, or who simply senses they have an untapped potential to lead a more fulfilling life, here are ways to flourish.

Based on decades of neuroscientific research, Dr Richard J. Davidson, a pioneering neuroscientist and New York Times bestselling author, and Dr Cortland Dahl, one of the world’s foremost experts on the science and practice of meditation, share their groundbreaking scientific model — the Healthy Minds Framework — that highlights the four core skills of human flourishing to counteract such problems.

THE SONG OF STORK AND DROMEDARY
by Anjet Daanje, translated by David McKay

'A novel that left me so overwhelmed I have not yet fully recovered … I have never had a reading experience like this one, and I don’t know if I will ever again be so impressed by a book.'
Thomas de Veen @thomasdeveen, for @nrcnl

From the International Booker Prize-longlisted author and translator of The Remembered Soldier, comes the Dutch novel of the century — The Song of Stork and Dromedary, a transcendent, spectacular masterpiece inspired the life and literature of Emily Brontë, the author of Wuthering Heights, and the historic literary figures, the Brontë sisters.

The book that has left Dutch critics lost for words, that has won the two biggest Dutch literary awards, the Libris (@librisliteratuurprijs) and the Boekenbon (@boekenbonliteratuurprijs), and that is set to shake the foundations of the English-language literary landscape forever.

With a new cover that is in itself an ethereal work of art to be treasured forever, designed by the phenomenal Tom Etherington (@_tometherington).

🥀 THE STORY 🥀

In the early 1800s, in Yorkshire, Eliza May Drayden and her sisters live far from the public eye, devoted to their shared love of reading and writing books. When, after dozens of rejections, Eliza May’s only novel, Haeger Mass, is finally published, it’s labelled as ‘ghastly’ and ‘immoral’. Over time, however, it is embraced by generations of readers as a masterpiece, and tales about its mysterious, reclusive author take on a life of their own.

In The Song of Stork and Dromedary, Anjet Daanje has crafted an absorbing literary mystery and an unforgettable meditation on love, life, loss, and the inexplicable nature of time. As the Brontës themselves did, Daanje shows us that storytelling is our only way to transcend death.

THE SONG OF STORK AND DROMEDARY IS COMING:
♥️ AU and NZ: 29 September 2026
♥️ UK: 8 October 2026

Pre-orders are now available on the Scribe website! ✨️✨️✨️✨️

It's publication day for three new titles to add to your bookshelves. 📚

In fiction, BODY DOUBLE by Hanna Johansson (translated by Kira Josefsson) follow a young transcriber who collects tapes from a ghostwriter’s office and returns home to type out the voices of strangers — stories that will become someone else’s novels. Her solitary life is predictable, unremarkable … until the day she hears something different on the tapes: a message meant only for her. Across the city, two women, Laura and Naomi have a brief encounter sparks something electric and strange Laura moves in with Naomi and as the days pass, she begins to mirror her more and more closely — her gestures, her habits, her very essence. Slowly, deliberately, Laura starts to take over Naomi’s life. Meanwhile, the transcriber makes a disturbing discovery: she is beginning to disappear.

DIARY OF A YOUNG DOCTOR by Ezzideen Shehab is a powerful eyewitness account of the genocide in Gaza by an extraordinary young writer and general physician. He describes the people he treats, the devastation of his homeland, and his incomprehension at the world’s silence in the face of the unfolding genocide.

And finally, COMING UP SHORT UP by Robert Reich is a thought-provoking, principled, clear-eyed chronicle of the culture, politics, and economic choices that have landed America where it is today — with irresponsible economic bullies and corporations with immense wealth and lobbying power on top, demagogues on the rise, and increasing inequality fuelling anger and hatred across the country.
