Schuler Shook
Creative, committed leaders in the worlds of lighting design, theatre planning, and audio video design.

All of us at Schuler Shook mourn the loss of our friend and colleague, Lorna Luebbers. Lorna passed away on May 2, 2026, following a long battle with cancer.
Lorna made an indelible impact in her 31 years at Schuler Shook, guiding the voice, culture, and organization of our firm. First hired as an administrative assistant for our Chicago office in 1993, Lorna immediately became an integral part of the company, always ready to jump in wherever support was needed with a reassuring and patient presence.
Often regarded as wearing many hats, Lorna did it all; developing organizational methods, building business development strategies, and leading our Marketing and Administration departments. She even helped focus lights once or twice, which she would recount as some of her favorite memories at Schuler Shook.
While Lorna retired in 2025, her impact is still evident every single day. She was a leader, a mentor, and, most of all, a friend. We will all remember her fierce commitment to excellence, her sharp wit, and her kind spirit. We will also remember her devotion to family as well as her advocacy within her community and for the environment.
We are grateful for the years we had with Lorna. She was one of us, and she always will be a part of who we are.
A service of remembrance will be held:
Saturday, May 30th
Visitation begins at 10:00am
Funeral liturgy held at 11:00am

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Ebenezer Lutheran Church (Chicago), Gilda’s Club Chicago @gildasclubchi, or The Nature Conservancy @nature_org.

Earlier this month, the entire Schuler Shook team came together in the Chicago area for three days of collaboration, conversation, and shared inspiration at our firm gathering, The Exchange.
Created to strengthen connections across offices and deepen our collective practice, The Exchange brought together designers, theatre planners, and staff for more than 30 sessions spanning every corner of the firm.
Highlights included:
🎤 A keynote from Mark Sexton of @krueck.sexton.partners,
💬 Conversations with our founders about the origins of Schuler Shook
🔨 A technical mockup exploring integrated stage catwalk accessibility solutions
🤝 A workshop led by Deborah Biddle of The People Company Consulting Group (@pplcollc ) focused on advocacy and inclusive design
📝 Case studies to dig into project details and techniques
📽️ Sharing our work in Slide Slams – 60 seconds per project!
And, of course: lively meals, a trivia night, and plenty of chatting over drinks of all kinds.
We’ll keep it going with online “Mini-Exchange” sessions and will look forward to our next time together!

Amphitheatre season is here, and there’s nothing quite like live music under the open sky!
Over the years we’ve seen the way amphitheatres reenergize and bring people together across generations and backgrounds. An outdoor performance space is never just a venue without a roof. They become a cultural touchpoints for communities, serving as a place to gather, unwind, and share unforgettable moments.
That experience is at the core of designing these spaces for us. From programming studies and stage configuration to seating, sightlines, artist support, and equipment planning, every decision is about making performances feel effortless for audiences and for artists alike.
And when design gets it right it doesn’t only support the show, it strengthens the community around it.

Who knew a former Sears could shine this bright?
The State of Illinois Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Headquarters in Springfield transforms a vacant big-box store into a vibrant, high-performance workplace centered on sustainability and smart design. By reusing the existing structure, the project cut down on waste and carbon while opening the building up to something it never had before: daylight.
Lighting plays a central role in the transformation. Gone are the harsh fluorescents, replaced with soft, indirect LED illumination that works with the sun, not against it. Daylight harvesting and occupancy sensors keep energy use in check, while linear lighting details echo the architecture and bring a sense of clarity and rhythm to the space.
Even outside, the design is thoughtful with low-glare, full cut-off fixtures that protect the night sky and the surrounding community.
It’s proof that with a little creativity (and a lot of intention), yesterday’s retail box can become today’s sustainable workplace.
This project was recently recognized by the @thelightingbureau's Tesla Awards with aSpecial Citation for Adaptive Reuse of a Retail Building.

When people say "turn it up to Eleven", it's possible they're talking about this project...
At 44 stories, Eleven is the tallest residential tower in Minneapolis, offering a luxury living experience right on the banks of the Mississippi River.
Our team handled interior and exterior lighting design for all public areas of the new high-rise, including all public lobbies, fitness rooms, lounges, a golf simulator, and demonstration kitchen. The exterior scope included the tower, landscape, driveways, and amenity decks.
Custom lighting fixtures, integrated lighting details and energy efficient LED systems are all part of the design, working to create a resident experience that is welcoming, warm, and elegant.

Safety, but make it fashion!
Hard hats are a wardrobe essential in our industry, and our team has been hard at work practicing their model walks for upcoming site visits. While we don't recommend attempting these moves on theatre catwalks, we do recommend regularly inspecting your hard hats and ensuring they are within the expiration date. Safety is always on trend, and hard hats are never going out of style!
