On the outskirts of Moscow, a queer ornithologist named Lydia builds her own Twin Peaks-inspired world. Drawn to birds and haunted visions, she creates a surreal, dreamlike reality that blurs the boundaries between life and myth. It’s hard to believe, but it has already been five years since the largest protests in the modern history of Belarus.
Lukashenko is still in power, for already 31 years. The country continues to face massive repression, and Belarus has officially become a co-aggressor in Russia’s terror war against Ukraine.

Five years have passed since opposition figures Viktor Babaryka, his son Eduard, and Maria Kolesnikova were sentenced to long prison terms (up to 14 years) and remain held incommunicado, without any contact with the outside world.

Since 2020, at least 8,421 people have faced criminal prosecution for political reasons, and politically motivated verdicts have been issued against at least 7,116 people. Today, human rights defenders recognize 1,155 people as political prisoners in Belarus, and continue the fight for the release of political prisoners. Unfortunately, the recent release of 14 prisoners has not slowed the pace of repression. According to @viasna96, since the beginning of 2025, around 1,700 people have already been detained. Authorities still use torture, including against those with severe illnesses, minors, parents of multiple children, and hold people under forced psychiatric treatment.

With MARA we want to shine a spotlight and honour everyone who was stripped of their freedom in their fight for justice. These people serve as a profuse and unreasonable reminder of the changes that occurred in the hearts and minds of a whole nation.
