The stillness of Antarctica is occasionally punctuated by a wide open jaw. 🦭

Weddell seals are among the few mammals that remain on the ice, year-round. Beneath the surface, they are capable of diving to over 600 metres, staying submerged for more than an hour, navigating under ice shelves where air is far from guaranteed.

Those teeth, as it happens, do considerable work. Weddell seals maintain breathing holes by grinding through refreezing ice, a task that continues throughout their lives.

On land, the contrast is total. Energy conserved, movement minimal, long hours spent in apparent indifference to the cold. We watched this particular individual from a respectful distance, largely motionless, until that jaw opened wide enough to suggest either a greeting or a strong preference to be left alone. We chose the latter.

In Antarctic waters, penguins operate as pursuit divers, using powerful flippers to “fly” underwater. Gentoo penguins, in particular, can reach speeds of up to 36 km/h, making them the fastest of their kind. Their bodies are shaped for it — dense bones to reduce buoyancy, streamlined form to minimise drag, and a metabolism tuned for short, decisive hunts.

What appears playful above the surface is anything but below it.

They feed primarily on krill, fish, and squid, often diving repeatedly to depths of 20 to 100 metres. Each movement is economical. Each dive calculated.

At water level, the interaction changes. Penguins surface without hesitation, often within a few metres, pausing just long enough to observe before continuing on. There is no sense of performance, only routine.

Moments like these rarely last.

Rumour has it, Antarctica 🇦🇶 is not truly experienced until it is paddled.

From the deck of sailfirebird, the dramatic ice landscape feels vast and distant. From a kayak, it closes in immediately. Ice sits at eye level, the surface inches away, dark water slipping quietly beneath the hull.

The bays cushioning Cuverville Island often drop quickly into depth, several hundred metres in places, their surface giving little indication of what lies below. It is hard not to consider the unseen, particularly when the water hovers close to freezing.

The penguins, for their part, give the matter little thought. They pass at their own pace, pausing occasionally to inspect before continuing on as if this were entirely routine.
