The cover for Don Toliver’s “Octane” album has been selected for the new American Photography book and I’m tickled purple to be joining so many of my peers in one of the few remaining vestiges of print.
The subsequent outtake shows me after we were just about wrapped and it was time to push it to the point of “we aren’t going to do that.” Luckily Don is cool as hell and he was game to pose with the coyote, he even posted a frame of himself with the animal that didn’t make the final cut. Wild times these 2026’s are 🤯

Another from my shoot with Don Toliver for his ‘Octane’ album art. This was such a fun day setting it all up and lighting it with friends. Quite a complicated technical challenge with everything living on set (8 foot tall moose included!) and getting all the light dialed in for a single frame.
People always ask if we shoot each portion separately and put it together later and the shortest answer is no. Of course you end up blending different areas together in the composite but there are dozens of individual frames that look pretty close to what you see here.
There are a ton of different stories to tell about how this concept evolved and was carried out but one of my favorite aspects of that is the original sketch (see next slide) which had been made not knowing this location actually existed and the kismet of how close it was to a place that was available to us. When we had our first creative call it seemed meant to be as I excitedly shared that we could do this in camera instead of shooting a bunch of backgrounds and CGI to make a background.
In the spirit of brevity I’ll leave it at that, feel free to reach out if you want to talk more about the rest of it. I can’t thank everyone involved enough for all the work that was put into it and to Don for making it happen!

The 100-inch (2.5 m) Hooker telescope was completed in 1917, and was the world’s largest telescope until 1949. It is one of the most famous telescopes in observational astronomy of the 20th century. It was used by Edwin Hubble to make observations with which he produced two fundamental results which changed the scientific view of the Universe. Using observations he made in 1922–1923, Hubble was able to prove that the Universe extends beyond the Milky Way galaxy, and that several nebulae were millions of light-years away. He then showed that the universe was expanding.
This set the scene for our cover shoot of Don Toliver’s latest album Octane which debuted at #1 on the Billboard Charts just yesterday. To be honest, I was skeptical of this location at first. I love how it turned out thanks to an amazing crew, but my initial thought was that it was too busy for an album cover. Especially once we loaded all this sound equipment into the space, there was just a lot for my old tired eyeballs to navigate.
By the end of the day I was convinced and now it feels on par with the wide exterior that brought us there in the first place, forthcoming. Thank you everyone involved, this was one for the books! 😘🫶🐥😵💫🤠🧥🫣😍

Ryan Schude still taking over Magenta’s feed. Here is an ongoing series of Installations I’ve slowly been chipping away at. All of these were made practically, in camera. Most were shot in Los Angeles except the covered car which was on the Million Dollar Highway, Route 550 near Red Mountain Overlook in Colorado.

Hello! @ryanschude taking over for the week. Gonna kick it off with a collection of images which I likely submitted to the Magenta competition back in 2009 and a song equally reminiscent of that time.
I’ve got stories for each of these and I’ll try and fill in the blanks later but we can start with the first one. Also a novelty of that time, the ugly Christmas sweater theme hadn’t hit office culture yet as far as I can tell, but maybe they actually invented it and we were glomming onto the trend? My “office” at the time (2006) was at a rollerblade magazine in San Diego with 8 people in it. 4 of us were at this party which took place in a run down apartment building in Golden Hill.
I hung 3 little flashes in the ceiling and grabbed this in one shot without telling the party goers (except the main 2) what was going on. It opened up my eyes to staged narrative which I had little experience with prior and set the tone for everything that was to happen next.
Let me know if there’s any questions on the rest of them and thank you Magenta for the opportunity!

A far cry from its humble beginnings as a college photo project shot on 4x5 film in 2001, “Them & Theirs” has taken on various forms to arrive at this particular commercial iteration involving both stills and video.
From fine art galleries, to various editorial outlets, and a six fingered handful of advertising clients, the impetus is constantly morphing while the basic premise remains: people and their vehicles.
Thanks so much to the whole crew who made this happen and coincidentally color coordinated (see group photo —->) credits in comments . . . 😘🦆🙈🐥🏃➡️👍🙌🏻🤩
Fun fact: Volkswagen has been using a similar version of this white cyc look in their advertisements for 75 years! Honored to be part of such a storied tradition.
