Been working on this story since the beginning of this year & finally get to share with you!

For Hour Detroit’s 30th anniversary issue, I got to write a cover story on actor Jeff Daniels, his career, his love for all things Michigan & lots more (including a whole section on “Dumb & Dumber,” which his agents begged him not to do; he still has a book of the 200+ negative reviews it got). This is by far the biggest magazine spread I’ve ever written, using interviews with Jeff at his home and recording studio in Chelsea (so many guitars, including a custom model made for him & one signed by George Harrison)

Read the whole thing online + in print via Hour’s May issue, which is available for purchase in fancy grocery stores & super easy to steal from your dentist’s office

Massive thank you to @chuknowak for the great photo + awesome cover ✨✨✨

what a year of looking at great art / got turned into art a couple times / played a lot of pool / opera in gorgeous settings / the best concert I saw was under a bridge / so many lovely friends (going to love them even more in 2026) / wore a lot of fur this year / now here’s a guy / played over 6,000 songs on the radio / many musical memories / brunch in the sky / more friends! / wrote about my love affair with my favorite restaurant / met some legends like Jeff mills & Jane Goodall / wore a tux & went to some galas / I love you!

still amazed that I’m immortalized in portrait mode by my friend Richard Wilson, a technically skilled mastermind painter who is on a mission to elevate Detroit art, music + the people behind both through these loving, photorealistic oil paintings of his… still absolutely SURREAL to process this, but another one of Richard’s subjects @waajeed put it in perspective the best: “Most folks who have oil painting of them are aristocrats or dead. We dun good.”

@richardwilsonartwork is part of a lovely show TONIGHT that I think you should check out — slide 3 has the info, including a look at his portraits of legends Alice Coltrane + Donald Byrd. there’s a badass concert with @tallblackguyproductions honoring their music afterwards at the raw space, too

I don’t do alot of posts like this promoting shows but this one is worth your time!

after meeting Dr. Jane Goodall, you’ll likely suffer from “Goodall guilt” — there’s just no way to measure up to this oracle, someone who has completely dedicated her life to something larger than herself. it’s a super power in a regular human who decided to do extraordinary things — first for animals, and then for humans. her work has redefined our understanding of both! in 1960, she was the first person to document wild chimps using tools, rewriting what we understood about ourselves & animals. anyway… here’s a video of us doing a pant-hoot, which chimps use to communicate. we did it incorrectly & Dr. Goodall let us know it. will never forget tonight! 🐵💕

I’ve never been an oil painting before! What a surreal feeling!

To be painted by the wonderful Richard Wilson (you may know him from his massive Stevie Wonder mural downtown), to be included amongst his favorite people / absolute legends in the city, like Joel Fluent Greene, Mahogani Music’s Tracy Washington, DJ Etta, Kelly Golden, Hubert Massey, Freddy Diaz & so many others…surreal / overwhelming / grateful all come to mind!

On top of that, Richard will remind you there’s not a lot of money or interest in portraits; he’s painting out of a deeply altruistic sense of representing a community he’s deeply a part of, and god damn we’re so happy to have him 💕

@waajeed put it in perspective the best… “Most folks who have oil painting of them are aristocrats or dead. We dun good.”
