Did you know parts of the Gulf and Burma were once governed as part of British India? Most people think of Partition as a single event that split India and Pakistan, but the reality is far more complex. The British Indian Empire once stretched far beyond the borders we associate with South Asia today, and its breakup happened through a series of political separations, partitions, and administrative fractures that shaped multiple regions in very different ways.

I’ve been reading Shattered Lands by @travelsofsamwise and learning so much about the history of the Raj that I genuinely never knew before. I’m turning some of those stories into a three-part series exploring the forgotten borders, partitions, and afterlives of the British Indian Empire.

The question is not whether tourism is good or bad, at this point it’s inevitable. What we should focus on is how we responsibly engage with the places we visit, understand local issues, and learn the histories behind the landscapes we consume.

Gilgit-Baltistan is a perfect example of this. To outsiders, it can seem “pristine,” untouched, almost separate from the rest of the world. But beyond the beauty are ongoing conversations around political representation, militarization, land, environmental strain, and rapid development.

As tourism grows, so do questions around who benefits from it, who gets displaced by it, and who gets to shape the future of the region.

If you want to learn more, I really recommend the anthology Beyond the Mountains: Social and Political Imaginaries in Gilgit-Baltistan. It brings together indigenous and local voices to explore the region’s cultural heritage and political complexities beyond the tourist gaze.

I have so much to share from this trip but all I want to say is Gilgit-Baltistan is hands down one of the most beautiful places in the whole world. 🥹🏔️ This is going to be one of my core memories for the rest of my life
