The “Ying Laoye” (迎老爷) festival is one of the most iconic folk traditions of the Chaoshan region, celebrated mainly in the cities of Chaozhou, Shantou, and Jieyang. In Chaoshan culture, deities are respectfully referred to as Laoye (“Lord” or “Honored Elder”), while ying means to parade or escort. The tradition involves inviting the gods out of their temples to tour the community and bless the people.
At its heart, the festival is a simple and sincere expression of the local people’s hopes for favorable weather, peace, and prosperity. It is also a way of giving thanks for the blessings received throughout the past year. The scale of the celebrations helps strengthen family ties and neighborhood bonds, and encourages people who have moved away to return home and reunite with their loved ones.
I’m from Chaozhou, a city in southern China. This past Chinese New Year, I spent two months back in China, though less than a month of that was actually in Chaozhou. This video is film in my village, where my dad grew up. When I saw the deity rush out from the crowd, I burst into tears. Maybe it was because I had been away from Chaozhou for so long. The sense of unity and collective spirit back home is incredibly powerful. In that moment, I felt an overwhelming energy around me. I felt as if the deity was truly there. I felt as if my grandparents were there too. The ancestors of the Chen family, whom I honor and pray to, seemed to be there as well. I’ve always been someone who takes risks and ventures far from home. During these years abroad, so many things—both big and small—have happened in my life. And I know that somehow, through it all, someone has been quietly watching over me.

今天是清明节,纽约下雨,我打开了一段时间没有看的一个 project. 去年夏天在中国拍了很多东西,但一直没有分享。今天终于有一些时间静下心来去看。这是爷爷的 CD机,和旁边装满 CD的架子。
Today was Qingming Festival, it was raining in New York. I opened a project I hadn’t looked at in a while. I recorded a lot of footage in China last summer, but I haven’tshared it yet. Today I finally had some time to look at it. This is my Ye Ye’s CD player and his shelf of CDs next to it.
