SPRING FEVER reception this Thursday April 2, 5-8pm
I’m adding some new pieces this week!
It’s the last chance to see my first SOLO SHOW (!!!) without making an appointment!Stop by and say hi en route to Pioneer Square Art walk.
Thank you Garrett @grey.architectural.studio for the opportunity to show in this glorious glass block stair rotunda.I have long been obsessed with this complex: Hillclimb Court, 1982 Olsen-Kundig Seattle modernist icon. The cast concrete buildings have a tropical brutalist feel to me, with thoughtfully incorporated greenery and outdoor spaces- but in Seattle. Tying my light sculptures in to architecture is where my career working with Neon began, and these sweeping glass block walls feel like they were made for Neon.Connection between light & space continues to be at the core of my art practice, so showing work in this incredibly special building is beyond a dream.
Thank you to everyone who came out for the opening- it was awesome to see so many faces on a surprise snow day! This has already been such an amazing first solo show experience.
We hope to see you this week!

My beautiful Mom, Diane, left this earth on September 19.
She has been struggling with two diseases, each progressing fatally, either of which would leave her institutionalized. After a career in health care, witnessing other patients living the life that would be ahead of her, she chose a legally assisted death in Switzerland.
I am feeling her loss so wholly after being by her side 24/7 for these past 18 months. She was ready to go; I wasn’t ready for her to leave.
Between hospital stays and ER marathons, we did our best with the time we had.We took every adventure we could, shaping outings around her capacity each day.Sometimes it was just looking at the view from inside the car; on better days we walked. We never knew what kind of day we were waking up into. When she was feeling good, we did overnights around Washington state. The disease took her ability to taste, and severely restricted her diet. Mom, a lifelong cook and enjoyer of food, still loved the experience of dining out. And so any lab test or doctors visit was followed by a meal somewhere I thought would delight her.
When it was time to go to Switzerland, she said, why not go to Paris first-? And so we did, in spite of a flare up just days before. It was my first time in her favorite city with her, as an adult. We cried too easily when things were beautiful, but we also laughed and laughed and had our long talks and cafe walks. She was able to be more active in Paris than she had been all summer. Her decision to end her life while ‘I am still me’ set her, she said, free.
My Mom and I went through hell, true and actual hell together, this past 18 months. The diseases she has were complex to care for, and a nightmare for her to live. She taught me to find ways to keep living, enjoying life however we could. She showed me that it’s ok for there to not be a silver lining, no ‘at least…’ and no positive spin. We could only try to make the most of the situation we were in, and that’s what we did.I have never been more proud of anything in my life, than the time she and I created together.
Rest in peace Mom, lala salama. I love you.

Take refuge from the cold next to my neon fire @monroesf ❤️🔥
It’s accompanied by a family of three ‘tabletop’ neon sculptures, in a room inspired by the design work of Verner Panton. Incredible wavy wall murals by @caroline_lizarraga
This is my first piece in the historic North Beach neighborhood of San Francisco!
Neon bent by the incomparable Ames @rebel.neon - we need do a whole post about process for 3D pieces like this. Pattern making for sculptures like these is an art all in itself!
#nighclub #neon #northbeachsf #rhino3d #sculpture #neonsculpture #mcm #vernerpanton #monroesf #cozy #psychedelic #psychedelicozy

Sandwich Time!A design project from earlier this year:a modern take on the classic neon clock, for @primeroots deli headquarters in Berkeley CA.My version is constructed of acrylic instead of polished chrome, for maximal light refraction and a clean fresh look.I love working with plastics; special challenges, special rewards ✨
.
Prime Roots koji meats are animal free, delicious (like... really, really delicious) products with a short n’ tidy ingredient list, based on protein from the roots of mushrooms and other vegetable sources common in some Asian cuisines.Read all about the process over at their account, it's super interesting!

Last month, I got to work with @artofmanny_sf on the restoration of the historic @popsbar neon sign! It feels absolutely wonderful to tend to our civic environment, and care for such an important visual landmark. The constant stream of neighbors who stopped to chat about what the sign means to them honestly had me emotional. Thank you Pops Bar, for being a true community gathering space, supporting artists, DJs, constantly hosting fun events and keeping creative trades like neon and window painting alive and thriving in the neighborhood. Congratulations on your official Legacy Bar Status - going strong over 100 yrs. So thrilled to be part of this project! Thanks for calling the Rite Guy ; )
🍻to many more!

‘Due North’ 2022
.
Just trying to process the constant grind of current events has my attention, energy, time, life force feeling pulled a thousand (important) directions.Rest is so critical, but this world has my nervous system on full alert. It’s been a challenge to stay focused, stay healthy, stay the course.
.
As a sort of redirection ritual, I installed this golden arrow pointing to Earth’s Magnetic North in my Studio. It’s just one humble piece of Neon, but it’s orientation anchors it to the pull that underpins all existence on this planet. Magnetic North is always there to ground the compass when it’s spinning. A directional reconnect, available any time- all that’s needed is a way to tap in.
.
I’m going to experiment with making this #1 in a series limited to 7, so if you also would like a Neon arrow pointing to Magnetic North in your space, there will be six more available. Each color will need to be determined by the space it will live in, and who it will be pointing North for 🤍
.
Arrow bending credit to @c.r.glow, I was very lucky to scoop it up in an early pandemic shop cleaning.

Happy Father's Day!
'Beacon' Chandelier, 2020.
Made for my Dad during the darkest pandemic winter.Neon with a found wood "shade" that we thrifted together in an epic haul. (Bonus points if you can call out the original purpose)
.
The title, form, and colors- pure Neon and Argon/ Mercury- are meant to reference my Dad's time in the Coast Guard, including being stationed at lighthouses- and the close connection to the water he’s maintained ever since.I designed and assembled the chandelier, while my Dad sanded and finished the shade with marine varnish to detail out the nautical connection.
.
Included in these shots are a 'blob' table he designed and made in college in the 60's.He's not happy with the legs and considers them placeholders to this day, but I've always loved this table : )
.
Dad, thanks for inspiring me to make things as a life path, and for showing me how to use tools, design and problem solve at a young age. Also, how to THRIFT with VERVE.Apples and trees, etc 💛

‘Water Table Vase’ 2/22/2022
🍊 🌿 🌼
A piece about shared resources, the interconnected nature of survival. How we breathe the same air and the same sun ripens all our fruit. We’re all drinking from one straw, even though it may not feel like it sometimes, and what’s on either end might bloom so differently from the same water.

2021: I was sure I spent the year asleep and dreaming…
but looking back through Studio photos, what an amazing adventure Year 3 of Rite Guy has been! I’m absolutely thrilled to introduce @derongopie, who has started working with me as a Junior Designer! And @loverlykiki, who blessed us with her talents as the very first Studio Assistant, forever setting the bar high. Somehow, in spite of the pandemic, we pulled off projects large and small and I couldn’t be more proud and grateful for what we, and an amazing crew of collaborators, curators, and clients accomplished last year.Thank you all for riding along!

A brilliant week chaperoning my Big Flamingo lamp through @nycxdesign
🦩
Thank you @jonald.dudd curators @nicecondo and @lydiacambron for bringing all of us out here exploring the edges of ‘design’ together in one beautiful place 💙
🦩
And thank you @canalstreetmarket for hosting us in style!
🦩
FYI JonaldDudd is officially big time now: only once all week did someone ask if I meant Donald Judd 🤙

A bittersweet announcement today: you have one more week to go see the Neon Cloud @ritualvalencia. Halloween will be it’s final day in existence as originally designed.
🎃
It’s with gratitude that I say goodbye to this piece; my very first experience designing in Neon, way back in 2014.
It’s the project that led to connecting with @petersonneon, who got me started on my Neon journey.
I still consider it some of my best work.
🧟♂️
It will be moving to a new location in 2022, and I’ll reconfigure it into a different sculpture, site specific to its setting.
🧛
Who knows how this may have factored into the decision, but there is a new @farleyscoffee in the international terminal of the San Francisco Airport that has an *extremely* similar installation.
(Last slide)
☕️
Farley’s original location was my nearest and dearest coffee shop through design school- I was there almost every day. Their beloved, carefully curated art and design magazine section made me feel at home in their consciously creative-centric environment.I’m surprised and saddened anyone steering the ship at Farley’s would agree to go the route of duplicating an original art piece in the same small coffee community. But, maybe this is finally my chance to make it big time on @designwithincopy 🌦 Anyway, while you will no longer be able to visit my original work at Ritual, this LED knockoff ghost will continue to haunt travelers at Terminal 3.
👻
RIP, sweet Neon Cloud.
I sure am sad to see you go; but there’s such power in releasing a favorite piece to the ether. I’m excited to see what new creative space this process opens up ✨
