Exploring themes of birth, death, animal-human relationships and parallel worlds suggests that Christina Bothwell is a magical realist. Her work conjures scenes from fables or children’s stories in which something impossible is happening quite naturally and spontaneously.

Today we are remembering Jaroslava Brychtová, born 100 years ago today.

Called internationally acclaimed by the New York Times and brilliant and talented by the Corning Museum Of Glass, Czech sculptor, Jaroslava Brychtová (1924-2020) was the quiet strength and backbone in the unparalleled 50 year creative and life partnership with Stanislav Libensky. While she described their work as “my sculpture for your drawing” intuitively subjugating her work to Stanislav’s vision, the pieces – many monumental in scale and always in spirit – would never have taken form without her. A feat that much more impressive, because she successfully ran an almost all-male team for decades in a society which remained heavily male chauvinistic. She was a pioneering artist whose quiet demeanor belied someone with courage, vision, and tenacity beyond imagination.

In her 2020 New York Times obituary, Stephen Kurutz wrote: “Though admires and critics focused on the massiveness of their work, Ms. Brychtová insisted in the documentary film The Space of Light, that scale was not the biggest challenge: ‘it’s ideas that are hard to get to, not size,’ she said.”

Happy 100th Birthday, Jaroslava - a role model to so many!

One last week for Matthew Day Perez’s Accumulation show & also for Heller Gallery’s Chelsea location. We will be open through this Saturday, May 18.Please stop by to help us say good-bye to 303 10th Avenue, the space where we have been for the past 11 of the 51 years the gallery has operated seven sequential locations in Manhattan.

Matthew’s Gray Pool is one of three new pieces in which a thicker casting and a polished front surface create a tantalizing and elegant sense of depth.Like looking at a treasure you’ve just discovered at the bottom of the sea.

Congratulations to Norwood Viviano on the Delphi Award he is receiving today from the Smithsonian Women’s Committee in Washington, D.C!Happily, the celebration coincides with the release of his newest piece Mining Industries: Midtown Manhattan. The piece, for which the LiDar data long remained elusive due to security concerns, shows in spectacular detail some of the most iconic cityscape - New York City’s midtown Manhattan - with both the Empire State and the Chrysler buildings captured here.

And, if you are in the DC area tomorrow, Norwood, along with Visionary award recipients Judith Schaechter & Dan Daily, will be in conversation with Smithsonian American Art Museum and Renwick Gallery Director, Stephanie Stebich, on a panel titled Trio in Glass - 1-2pm at the National Building Museum.

This is the final week of Kim Harty’s exhibition Birthing Anatomies!Using her considerable skill as a glassmaker and the material’s innate ability to represent the complex physicality of human organ forms, her pieces provoke contemplation of the beautiful as well as the grotesque aspects of the human body. Her work in Birthing Anatomies deals with themes of reproductive justice and bodily autonomy, equal rights, and democratic freedom.

The exhibition runs through this Saturday, April 13.

Working with Libenský & Brychtová pieces from private collections entering the secondary market over the past several years, we have had the privilege of continuing to be in daily touch with their work, andare remembering Jaroslava Brychtová, who passed away four years ago today.
