Footage my parents took in 1982 driving down to the southern border of Lebanon. Same images of destruction, displaced people and views of smoke over Beirut from our balcony. Hezbollah didn’t exist back then. People who justify wars as a means to peace have totally lost themselves or are too accustomed to comfort to even question the origin of it and challenge the narrative they have been fed.

My thoughts are with all people caught in the midst of such violence, whose lives are interrupted by war direct and indirectly. ❤️‍🩹 and for the nature and cultural heritage being destroyed.

2026 surreally marks 20 years since I moved to NYC. After immigrating from Lebanon in 1982 and returning in 2006.
-
Feels serendipitous to have work included in the Niyū Yūrk exhibition @nypl which shines a light on the often overlooked history of Middle Eastern and North African (MENA) immigration to New York City, and the expanded identities and creative practices that have stemmed from it.
-
SO much love and respect for the work @hibarabstract has put into curating this exhibition, highlighting the library’s role in documenting our collective history. Touched that the work she chose to include leans towards abstract impressions and interventions with NYC public walls moving beyond certain categorizations.
-
Please go visit the show which is up until March 8th and spend time with the books, photographs and videos on display.

Shoutout to the graphic design done by @waelmorcos

Releasing simultaneously with “1982” on Friday, September 12th at 12pm is Rhea Karam’s “ECHO”.

“ECHO”is a sculptural artists’ book made of two interlocking leporellos with plywood covers. The book presents slivers of archival family photographs, separated by images of walls from Beirut and New York — the artist’s city of birth and her current home, respectively. The archival images portray fragments of life before displacement from Lebanon, in a home that no longer exists as such.

This book offers two readings, depending on if it is viewed flat or upright. When viewed page by page (flat), the viewer sees only a cropped version of a photograph — framed details such as a father’s interlocked hands, a distant view of Beirut from the balcony, a single rose in a metal vase. When viewed upright (or sculpturally) the pages create a lenticular effect, and the cropped images suddenly become whole.

Vacillating between past and present, concrete and abstract, “ECHO”contends with diasporic speculation and longing, and the tendency, as adults, to patch together dislocated childhood memories with anecdotes and familial belongings to construct comprehensible stories about the past.

11.125 x 21.5 x 2 inches
Cloth-hinges leporello
20 pages
Archival pigment printed
Edition of 6 + 2AP

Drift by Rhea Karm is now out. Get your copy. Link in Bio📍

Makan Press is thrilled to share Drift, a handmade artist book by Rhea Karam. Known for her poetic engagement with urban walls, Rhea transforms fragments of the city into layered visual narratives—cutting, spray painting, and overlapping textures that act as an archive of stories accumulating in the public space.

Drift continues this exploration, bringing the energy of the streets into book form. Rhea’s practice moves fluidly between photography, printmaking, and installation, always returning to walls as sites of dialogue—between people, architecture, and time. With Drift, these conversations unfold page by page, reminding us that the city is not static, but alive with stories of displacement, identity, and resilience.

Drift officially launches on Thursday (9/11) as part of Makan’s participation in the NYABF @printedmatter_artbookfairs. A book singing of Drift with the presence of Rhea is held on Friday (9/12) at 4pm. Visit Makan’s table at m7

For the past ten years I have been making handmade books, printed, painted, bound and designed with love. I consider the book the art itself rather than a representation of it.

Each book is a long and consuming process and always a leap into the unknown. They often end up in library collections and spend a lot of time tucked away.

So seeing oneof my books so beautifully presented and in conversation with of a room full of paintings, prints and ceramics brings me great joy. Thank you@klausgallery for including it in this show so thoughtfully installed.

Explosion Robinson is up until August 15, 87 Franklin street.

Visual identity and web design for @rheak . We honed in on the visual motifs found in Rhea’s work: lines (both parallel and intersecting), triangles, angles, bold geometric forms, and bright colours.

Printed assets include custom folded envelopes, which again mirror the angles found in her work. Even the blue tape is a subtle nod. Thank you to our friend and forever collaborator ❤️
