At Reflectric we are always on the look out for new Reflective surfaces & one of the most interesting finds at this years BSC show was Illya Friedman & The Betty Lighting System. Made fresh off his CNC machine in Burbank Hollywood.

This new lighting technology is just about to start selling. Gaffers & DoPs have started usingthem on Baywatch & the latest Spielberg movie.

Happy Wednesday day movie fans! Today we take a break from film festival news, to introduce you to our master of shadows and light — meet our gaffer Jason @reflectric_ 💡

“I was intrigued by Victors & Oli’s approach of lighting it via just “natural sources” to help anchor the fantasy nature of the film & the FX. How much of the film could be shot with “naturalistic light” sources was a challenge I was keen to try!

In the end we went fully with this approach using just two lamps! One outside the window (a Dedo PB70) & one other for the light source outside the bedroom door (a Dedo DLH4)

The Dedo PB70 was our lamp outside the bedroom window. Although only a 1.2KW fixture; its low profile base, the 2º beam & the “virtual light source” aspect of the lamp, ment we were able to get a powerful true daylight looking source right next to the window. The PB70 was pointing into a Lightbridge C100 #2 Reflector that further extended the “virtual light source” & gave natural looking light in relation to shadows & light fall off.

To help augment the look, the scenes with curtain closed we covered all off screen areas of the bedroom ( the walls ceasing & floor) with black bed sheets to help with the contrast & the feeling of a dimly lit environment. When the curtains were open we swapped this for white bed sheet. To help mimic how the sunlight would be bouncing & reflecting off the room. Keeping the room free from light sources helped greatly as the film was shot in an actual bedroom that was very very small.”

Firebrand was a joy & privilege to work on. Full of great performances, & even if we say so, stunning lighting & shots. The location Haddon Hall has some of the oldest glass windows in England (sadly not all survived) The diamond leaded glass windows are curved to always catch the reflecting rays of the sun during the day & have brown & green staining to allow the colours of the natural world to come into the room. Something that was taken into the lighting approach.

Reflectric supplied the Dedo PB70’s & The Lightbridge C100’s for this amazing film.

Recreating Moonlite with one Dedo PB70 & a Lightbridge C100 Diff #2. The dimmer was turned all the down on the ballast but was still too bright so Gaffer @caroslighting added some ND &bobbin net. A strip of minus green gell was also added to fit with the colour pallet of the film.

Reflectric supplied the Dedo PB70’s & The Light bridge C100’s for this amazing film!

Due to maintenance scaffold at location DoP: Hélène Louvart & Gaffer: Carolina Schmidtholstein
couldn’t get an 18KW where they needed it, without it casting shadows of the scaffold into set. The ability to position the Dedo PB70 in the scaffold tower & be able to fix The Lightbridge C100 next to the window solved the problem. Plus this set-ups proximity to set, ment the PB70’s 1.2KW, easily matched the output of the 18KW.

Reflectric supplied the Dedo PB70’s & The Light Bridge C100’s for this amazing film!!

Shooting completely on location at @haddonhall, this system of lighting truly came into its own!
One side of the Hall, due to subsidence & a step drop, meant it wasn’t practical to use 18K fixtures on cranes. The low profile the PB70 & discreteness of the Reflectors enabled Gaffer @caroslighting to light right from outside the window, losing no lumens that the 18K’s would have provided. This approach also allowed DoP to have the windows kit free when in the back of shot.
