Please join us Sunday May 10 at 4pm for an album listening session to 'sound/field' by Asheville-based Tenor Jay

Presented by Roy Parvin and Janet Vail

sound/field is “a gorgeous ambient gem,” according to Philip Sherburne of Pitchfork magazine. Surprising praise for an independently produced album created by Roy Parvin, an acclaimed writer with no previous musical background. 

The album took form in a year of several difficult surgeries. “I knew I had to keep worry on the other side of the door. Thus music,” he says.

Parvin created melodies as a kind of creative challenge. Then Hurricane Helene hit, and the music sat on his computer until the power came back on. When he finally returned to the songs, he was amazed how they hummed with a sense of resilience and peace.

Roy and his partner, Janet Vail, mastered and edited the tracks and released the album in 2025 with all proceeds going to @belovedasheville to aid in Hurricane Helene relief efforts. Much to their surprise, the work garnered rave reviews from the top critics in the field, as well as making several best of the year lists.

NOTE: Our Deep Listen events are intentional gatherings designed for immersive, uninterrupted listening. After the music ends, we invite you to stay for conversation and share reflections.

pavlova? for spring? groundbreaking

we've been wanting to make a pavlova since before we even opened, and she's finally here 🥹 and boy, was the wait worth it:

named after the great prima ballerina anna pavlova, and with an internationally disputed origin (australia vs new zealand vs the world), this dessert is an iconic classic made of meringue, whipped cream, and fruit - with as many variations as the number of chefs making it
