While doing a carrier-walk with the bb, I found a used, basic, HP consumer type shit laserjet printer on the street not far from where I live (a block from Hadden Hill cafe for all you locals of that spot). I wondered if it worked, hoped it would work, because I wanted to learn how to laserjet print straight onto clear 16mm leader. Asked the person who had put it outside to store it on their stoop so I could come back with the car and pick it up, took it home, dusted it off, and started trying to figure out how to register the film so that I could print straight onto it.

4 months later, many hours of frustration and fun gone by, me and @postmistressgeneral developed a piece for live audiovisual performance using the film that I printed. Divya scored the piece with electronics, noise machines (the baby kind:), wind up music boxes, saxophone, and voice. We're going to perform the piece for the first time this Saturday at ATA, for Craig Baldwin's OPTRONICA live audiovisual performance showcase. Doors are at 7:30, show starts at 8pm. Very excited to present this piece!

Becoming a parent is something that many people told me I'd never understand until the baby had come into the world. It's true, in the obvious sense that you can't fully, fully, understand something until you're in the middle of it. Especially something as transformational as becoming a permanent caretaker for a little human.

But at the same time we also have the capacity to dream, to envision, to project forward the type of human we want to be in the world -- the type of parent we want to be. And a big part of that for me has been wanting to be fully engaged in the world as a way of being fully engaged as a parent. They're related, I know, but sometimes they're also pitted against each other. Privatizing forces -- not in the public sector cannibalism sense, but in the sense of enclosure, domesticity, individualization -- are at work that make it hard to engage in multiple scales of caring labor, disciplined creative practice, hobbies, exercise, etc.

I'm grateful to be able to engage in a form of parenting that values it all.
