Last week’s assignment: step into the Young Fellows Ball at The @frickcollection and see what it was giving.

A staple of New York’s spring social calendar, the evening brought together a beautifully dressed crowd across art, fashion, media, and culture for a night inspired by this year’s theme, Travel Through Time. From Marie Antoinette–inspired silhouettes to Renaissance-worthy gowns, the fashion felt like paintings stepping right out of their frames.

Of course, curiosity got the best of me… so I grabbed the mic and started chatting with folks in attendance to ask the only question that mattered: what is it giving tonight?

The evening also spotlighted Gainsborough: The Fashion of Portraiture, making the whole night feel like a celebration of art, individuality, and style across centuries. A little time travel, a little cultural commentary, and a whole lot of fabulousness. ✨

Today’s lewk is inspired by Powerline from A Goofy Movie — a character who taught baby Kween Chrissy that standing out was not a flaw… it was power.

Fashion became one of the first places I explored masculinity, femininity, softness, glamour, confidence, and play without apology. Some days the energy is sharp and structured. Some days it’s delicate and dramatic. Some days it’s all of it at once, hunny.

Growing up, that freedom of expression often made me a target for bullying. Books became sanctuary. Personal style became language. Creativity became survival.

A few things that helped me grow into my expression:

⚡Stop treating style like a test you can fail.
⚡Try on aesthetics before deciding they “aren’t you.”
⚡Let curiosity lead before insecurity does.
⚡ Wear the bold thing.
⚡ Existing fully will always inspire the people still learning how.

Pronunciation: gurl (with feeling)

Etymology: While girl is its origin, gurl is its evolution—reshaped by queer, Black, and drag communities into a form that holds multitudes. In the 20th century, especially within ballroom and LGBTQ+ vernacular, gurl became more than a name—it became language for kinship, truth-telling, and playful calling out. A greeting, a gut check, a gospel.

But let’s be clear—gurl carries energy. It’s the way a friend looks at you before the tea is spilled. It’s the beginning of a sentence that’s about to snatch wigs and uplift souls. It can be soft and sweet or sharp and sacred. Gurl is linguistic glitter: it sparkles, it stings, it stays.

Overwatering is responsible for more houseplant problems than underwatering, dahling. 🌿

And it makes sense when you think about it — most people panic the second a plant looks “off” and immediately reach for the watering can. Whole time the roots are down there fighting for oxygen.

Healthy soil should hold both moisture and air. When soil stays constantly wet, roots can begin to suffocate, fungal issues can develop, and root rot can spread fast beneath the surface before you even notice a problem.

That’s why overwatered plants can often look confusing to beginners. Yellow leaves, drooping foliage, soft stems, and fungus gnats can all appear even though the soil is still wet. The plant is not thirsty at that point — the roots are stressed and struggling to function properly beneath the surface.

And maybe that’s the lesson, hunny.
Too much care, too often, can overwhelm what’s already under pressure.
Sometimes the most loving thing you can do is pause long enough to let something breathe.

As someone deeply invested in leveling up their skincare routine, bodycare rituals, and overall self-care practice this year, one thing I’ve been learning is that toner deserves far more attention than it gets.
