Place of Space
Uncomplicated Architecture, Space into Experience
VIC Surf Coast to NSW Northern Rivers

Exciting news for the team today with a stamped building permit hitting our inboxes for our Kana Street project!
Very excited to be working with the brilliant Oscar at @briodyconstructions who will be overseeing the build.
It's been a super collaborative process between Place of Space, the clients, the trades and Oscar himself to get to this point which has been such a great way to operate - clear, concise and productive for all parties. Can't wait to see how this comes together

The cherry on top for this new Kitchen space is the large @veluxaustralia solar operable skylight designed to flood this working area with natural light and ventilation.
Rather than punching smaller holes through the existing ceiling to achieve this, we mapped out where the existing rafters are within the ceiling cavity and centered a new timber lined shaft around it. A remote operated honeycomb blind will be installed to soften the day light as needed.
We created a bit of depth and shadowplay across our joinery by designing custom colourmatched handles to marry everything together. Everything in this Kitchen is neat and contained by using an integrated fridge/freezer and pocket sliding doors to conceal the appliances bench.
Not long until this one gets underway - set for construction in the new year.

As we move into the home from a terracotta lined entry way, we aimed to partially separate our zones once again - this time with the use of a custom freestanding unit clad in a softer, natural ash in contrast to the deep, rich browns across the bookshelf.
This unit acts as two things: a Coat and Bag Store accessible from the entry side, and, a Bar accessible from the Dining Room. The height of this is unit lets light bounce above and below, while giving some enclosure to the Dining Room.
The clients selected a beautiful copper pendant light designed by @louispoulsen, suspended over a circular Dining table. This table acts as almost a central axis to the entire design and is the pivot point the clients will circulate around in their new home.
The existing east facing windows have been enlarged to get as much morning light in as possible. We'll take you through the remainder of the space in our next series.

We chatted about this in a project video recently - and now we get to see the space visualised.
The brief behind this project was to revamp the dated floor plan to really boost the way the home can be used without doing the classic open plan approach. This first series of renders is to show how we play with dividing spaces that would otherwise be a plain entry and enclosed living room.
We've played with the shelving arrangement on a room dividing bookshelf pretty intensively to reach a solution that lets the clients place their collection of books, plants and other knick-knacks in a way that partially breaks the line of sight between rooms while staying connected.
Cupboards to the base of the bookshelf will give the sense of almost being in a contained or sunken lounge room when kicking back on the couch. A bench seat at the entry way doubles as a place to tie your shoes and as a place to store them, with a warm frosted diffused light glowing over the seat.
Keep the eyes peeled - we'll move through the space as the week rolls out. Keen to hear your thoughts on this approach

Roof Terrace living.
This space links the indoor to the outdoor living areas, structured to let light and breeze flow through without getting punished by the direct sun - all the while secretly hiding an existing tiled roof below.
Carefully placed breaks in the wall give a little restraint and relief to the space, carefully directling sightlines to the hinterlands beyond while the aperols get sipped.

We were stoked to see he finally got the words out for this video and we bet you are too.
Some insight into a project we’re working at the moment. This project is the perfect example of why you don’t need to extend or add on to create an incredible space.
Want more vids like this from Architect Jake? Let us know in the comments and Creative Director Kate will be able to convince him to do another video.

Place of Space is now operating amongst the buzz of the Byron Induzzy!
We’re seriously stoked to be sharing an office with two local legends @kickbuilding and @rockhavir.build
The power of the Builder/Carpenter/Architect triangle is next level; something that will see projects delivered with high class and high efficiency.
You can find us at 17 Banksia Drive, Byron Bay or more easily recognised as behind the delicious @happydays_byronbay coffee shop.
If you have a project you would like to dicuss, drop in and say hello - we’ll shout the coffee. More than likely there will be a dog or three for you to pat.

We swear we’ve been doing more than just searching the internet for boxes but Jake has chosen to share this news with you instead.
Project Mood-boarding.
For this interiors redesign we are focussing on zoning the primary habitable areas with permeable joinery divisions as a way of achieving open plan living with a tasteful touch of separation.

There were no compromises for this custom steel sliding door – here is why;
1. This opening was created in this wall for a reason – we wanted to bounce the light from the glass Laundry door beyond into the new Kitchen.
2. The view into the Pantry needed to be obscured but not completely blocked out.
3. We wanted it to look more special than your standard cavity slider.
There weren’t enough spare tiles from the original build (circa 2002) to infill the flooring here, so The Creative (@emma.jstewart) created a lovely travertine + white tile checkerboard infill to bridge the gap.
Worth seeing the comparison of the render vs. reality if you take a scroll through the feed.
