Digital platforms, once lauded for their promise of a brighter future, are gradually devolving into addictive, dysfunctional wastelands.

This is the reality that Emma Pham explores in 'Decay of the Great Digital Dream', a three-channel video work screening online for just a few more days on verge-gallery.net.

A young user named “Aero_Girl99” is introduced as a symbol of the concept of “lost futures”; a nostalgically idyllic vision of the world that technology was supposed to lead us towards. Aero_Girl99 undergoes a reckoning with these digital platforms as they mutate from their seemingly benevolent image into a much darker reality.

As the idyllic “Digital Dream” becomes gradually dismantled, Aero_Girl99 transmutes her despair into agency, facing the future as a state of eternal becoming; remembering that it remains hers (and ours) to shape.

Verge is pleased to announce that 'The Decay of the Great Digital Dream (2026)', by Emma Pham (@pixel.pems) will continue online as a Verge Digital project, until 27 April 🦋⚙️

Commissioned for 'How to dismantle the world (and still feel good about yourself in the morning)', 'The Decay of the Great Digital Dream' is a three-part video work depicting a cyber avatar, Aero_Girl99, as they navigate their relationship with internet culture.

Referencing early 2000s internet style ‘Frutiger Aero,’ Pham reflects upon early utopian visions of the internet in comparison with the current ‘digital wasteland’ which we find ourselves in, entangled with ‘enshittified’ contemporary networked systems.

💚 On the 18th of June 2025, we wrapped up our first-ever iteration of 𝙁𝙪𝙩𝙪𝙧𝙚 𝘾𝙪𝙡𝙩𝙪𝙧𝙚 – our pipeline program that embedded two early-career artists (Cassandra Li & Emma Pham) as well as two arts worker interns (Kirsten Maglalang & Kobra Sayyadi) into CuriousWorks’ operations.

🎤 As we have mentioned before, we are in awe of the entire 𝙁𝙪𝙩𝙪𝙧𝙚 𝘾𝙪𝙡𝙩𝙪𝙧𝙚 cohort and we thank them for their incredible energy, knowledge-sharing, and generative conversations. 💚 On the 18th of June 2025, we wrapped up our first-ever iteration of 𝙁𝙪𝙩𝙪𝙧𝙚 𝘾𝙪𝙡𝙩𝙪𝙧𝙚 – our pipeline program that embedded two early-career artists (Cassandra Li & Emma Pham) as well as two arts worker interns (Kirsten Maglalang & Kobra Sayyadi) into CuriousWorks’ operations.

🎤 As we have mentioned before, we are in awe of the entire 𝙁𝙪𝙩𝙪𝙧𝙚 𝘾𝙪𝙡𝙩𝙪𝙧𝙚 cohort and we thank them for their incredible energy, knowledge-sharing, and generative conversations.
