I began writing Chinaman in 2022 while trying to understand my relationship with my father and the silence that had built up between us over the years. It led to difficult conversations about the past and about my mother, conversations we should have had much earlier. Out of that came this film.

The story is only semi autobiographical, but many of the details come from my own childhood, from growing up around takeaway kitchens and from the quiet tensions that sit inside families when feelings are not spoken.

For a long time I did not tell my father what I was working on. Part of that was fear, and part of it was cultural. I had grown up believing that certain things should stay inside the family, that speaking openly could feel like disrespect, “or expose him” to judgement. I thought making this film public would feel like giving too much of our private life to strangers.

But the writing forced conversations we had avoided for most of my life. Slowly, the things that were never said began to surface. Before I ever showed him a frame of the film, the distance between us had already started to close.

We shot the film in Manchester in May 2024. Not long after, my father was diagnosed with stage four stomach cancer. I wanted to finish the film so I could share it with him, but I did not make it in time. He passed away in September 2024, and for a while I could not face returning to the film at all.

What I eventually understood is that the most important part had already happened. Making this film helped my father and me find a way back to each other. We became close in a way we never had been, and that came directly from finally speaking about what we had carried in silence for so long.

We finished the film in July 2025. Nearly three years after I first started writing it, I am now sharing the trailer for Chinaman.
