In January, I spent some time at @nowhere.outpost in the Mojave Desert (with my good friend @charlo_bango ) trying to assemble a photo essay about that region. At first glance, it may seem like a simple photo shoot in the south, but for me, it meant so much more, it was part of a bigger reflexion about photography.
In 2020, I decided to focus my work even more on photography, a choice that could have seemed a bit odd, coming from a videography background, sure, but a choice that would feel totally aligned with me. Nothing against videography (I still work on plenty of beautiful projects) , but I always naively felt like I could make a change through my photos rather than video on the long term.
Photography has taught me to stop, and to look. I’ve never realized before, how little we know and understand about our surroundings. It pushed me to ask more questions, about the people, the places, and to do something I never did before, to listen.
This photo essay is about simple curiosity of the past. About my way of learning about the places I go and visit. Things that happened, are happening, and the people that are living surrounded by what’s left of another time.

Dans « Vert-de-gris », @pauldussault nous transporte à Thetford, au cœur d’un paysage façonné par plus d’un siècle d’exploitation minière. Là-bas, les haldes d’amiante s’élèvent comme des montagnes grises — vestiges d’une époque où la terre était perçue comme une ressource inépuisable.
C’est dans ce décor qu’il nous présente Olivier, contremaître chez Virdis Environnement. Olivier vit et travaille sur le territoire de l’ancien site minier. Chaque jour, il consacre son énergie à la revitalisation de ces sols blessés, posant « un baume sur une plaie quasi inguérissable ».
Les photographies, assemblées afin de créer des tableaux panoramiques, multiplient les points de vue sur un même horizon. Dans le premier binôme, les monticules d’amiante s’étendent au bout du cimetière de Thetford ; puis, sur la page suivante, ce même paysage se dévoile à travers la fenêtre de la maison d’Olivier — comme si le regard, d’abord extérieur, devenait peu à peu intime.

It’s been a dream of mine to create something tangible with my work. It’s actually such an underwhelming feeling to post a picture that you truly care about on a platform like this one here. So I present my latest, a completely independent book, BESIDE THE WATER.
2 years ago, I travelled to the Mojave Desert with the aim of creating a series of images, not knowing the final form the project would eventually take.
Now, it’s time for me to share this piece of work that almost took 2 years to create, with the immense help of @charliesplayground , without whom the project would probably never have seen the light of day. She actually did put everything together, from the start to the finish line. I will be forever grateful for this.
This project is about my vision and questionings on how we’re evolving through our space and how we are reshaping it with our ways of living.
