After a slow month due to weather it’s nice to have scenery like this

First flights on the new SP140 electric paramotor from OpenPPG, optioned with the 4.8kWh battery.
It’s certainly heavier than my Scout/Moster185 but on your back it feels lighter, the battery is very close to your back and without taking measurements I’d say the prop hub is closer to your back. Combined with no low hanging fuel tank the centre of gravity is high and close to your back giving it that lighter feel.

The main advantage and why I bought this machine is the simplicity of “just going for a quick flight” I don’t have the issues with fuel mixing and disposal. No fuel smell means I can bring it inside the house.
This is only a benefit if you planned your flight and remembered to charge the battery…

I think the best advantage though is that there is no starting or warming up, arm the controller, squeeze the throttle, done!

Quieter too, when flying from Pembroke Park in Wanaka you need to be respectful of the right to peace and quiet, paramotors are pests when it comes to noise, apart from the takeoff once you’re on cruise or a gentle climb the noise is substantially more bearable than the 2-stroke machines.

Of course the downside of electric is the range, this won’t replace my petrol paramotor for those long distance missions but I’m very interested in going 4-stroke in the future

Me, Ron and Jim soaring Monte Baldo (Malcesine, Lake Garda, Italy). Temps on launch were around zero, hands were struggling but it was awesome to have a gap in the weather to soar with these guys before going out over the lake and practising asymmetric collapses, full frontal collapses and pre-stalls.

Being at Lake Garda for four days only managing two flights was a difficult game of para-waiting but I made the most of the flights by pushing past my confidence barrier to find and build my competence in glider control.

On the non flyable days I listened to stories of travel and epic flights, explored local spots and had more Italian pizza then I needed…
