This AMVCA piece took months of patience, precision, sleepless nights, and intentional craftsmanship to create. Every color was carefully placed to give the dress depth, movement, and life.

What you see for a few seconds on the red carpet is actually months of dedication behind the scenes. And honestly… seeing it come alive exactly how we imagined made every second worth it.

This Edo look for AMVCA Traditional Night was really special to me.
I knew from the beginning that I didn’t want to use regular embellishments or just do what everybody expected. So instead of beads, we worked with molded clay pieces that were hand-painted to match the rich Edo red velvet.

Benin people are known for their incredible clay work and bronze sculptures, so it felt right to tell this story through clay. Even the veil/train featured the image of the Oba of Benin, hand-beaded into the fabric as a tribute to our culture, royalty, and heritage.

What made this even more personal was the connection behind it. Simi’s mom is from Benin, and my own mother was born and raised in Benin too, so creating this piece felt like bringing a part of home to life through fashion.

The clay pieces were made in London and shipped to Nigeria for this dress. Unfortunately, many of them broke during the process, and honestly, there were moments it felt stressful, but we kept going and found a way to make it all come together beautifully. And seeing the final look made every single moment worth it.

This is why I love creating.
Taking an idea, a culture, a story, and turning it into something people can wear and feel connected to.

Creating Simi Drey’s dress was more than just making a glass dress.For me, it was about intention, texture, emotion, and detail.

One thing that was extremely important throughout this process was ensuring that every piece of glass used was properly cut, refined, and smoothened. I didn’t want the dress to feel harsh or unsafe. I wanted it to feel polished, elegant, and beautifully structured despite the use of glass.

From the beginning, I envisioned the dress like a wall of mirrors, reflective, captivating, and artistic, with vines and creeping flowers crawling across it like nature growing over architecture. I wanted the glasswork to feel fluid and figure-hugging, not heavy or rugged.
Every placement was intentional.
Every reflection mattered.
Every detail had to tell the story.

This is only a quick glimpse into the making because truthfully, I was deeply focused on bringing the vision to life rather than filming every single step. But seeing the final piece come together exactly how I imagined it, that feeling was unforgettable.
And the love this dress received all over the world reminds me why I create the way I do.
