I came across a stunning colony of Bell birds in Northern NSW and couldn’t resist recording them. What an incredible collective ambience. I’ve got 3 minutes of them up now on my YouTube channel. Hope to go back soon and record them for longer.

A stereo hydrophone recording that captured the cracks and changes in sea ice, as well as the Sci-Fi sounds of Weddell seals underneath the ice.
It’s such a unique and other-worldly sound.

Adult King Penguins make a surprising multi-layered call. To me it sounds as if these guys have a permanent ‘chorus’ audio effect on their natural voices.

A full hour of unreal audio. I had the opportunity to relax next to 10 giant beachmaster Southern Elephant Seals, during my stay in the Sub-Antarctic.

During this hour there were peaceful moments with seals breathing easy and snorting loudly. But there were also moments of aggressive vocalisation and loud slaps as their heavy bodies moved around in the muddy puddle.

I recorded this hour with my Zoom F6 and Schoeps CCM4’s and CCM8. Listen to it on my YouTube channel 🦭.

How To Record In Extreme Winds.

It’s an article I wish was available before I headed down south to record in winds over 150km/h.

Here’s an excerpt:
“Recording extreme winds is less about chasing a single ‘fix’ or ‘solution’ and more about stacking small, deliberate choices: the right wind protection, a sheltered mic placement, multiple takes from alternate positions, and the safety net of 32-bit recording. Over a year on a Sub-Antarctic island I learned that the best recordings come from accepting the limits of gear, prioritising location, and applying surgical, restrained editing only when necessary. The wind recording that feels most honest is usually the one that required the least work in post. “

I’m so excited to record these epic creatures 🎤 . It’s going to be a challenge though, the winds here are extreme, with calm days a rarity. Constant ocean noise from either side of the isthmus makes clean recordings very difficult, and the constant elephant seal burps intruding on any peaceful ambience I try to record 😂🦭.

I’m geared up with my my mics, plenty of wind protection and 32 bit recorders, to make it as easy as possible to take advantage of those rare calm days. But wow, you can expect some epic wind atmospheres on all the not-so-calm days!

An Elephant seal tries to escape as it is pinned down, underneath and between two more of the largest seals in the world.
I sat in silence and awe as I recorded one of the most fascinating moments of my antarctic summer.
None of these big guys are happy as they press their teeth into each other in this incredible mix of chaos and lethargy.
