In honor of National Learn to Swim Day, the Outdoor Afro community raised an incredible $21,313 to support swim instruction and water safety education through our Making Waves initiative.

These funds will help provide life saving swim lessons, expand water safety awareness, and create more opportunities for children and families to build confidence and joy in and around the water.

Over the years, I’ve spent time in deserts, forests, coastlines, and small towns that each carry their own rhythm. What stays with me isn’t just the scenery. It’s how I felt in those places, and how I moved through them.

People often think of tourism as checking places off a list. But the moments that have stayed with me didn’t come from hurrying to the next destination.

They came from slowing down. Really taking the time to understand the land I was standing on, and all the history and people that contributed to the rhythm of the place.

I’ve noticed this most during @outdoorafro trips, watching people arrive in a place for the first time and leave with more than just photos. They carry a deeper sense of connection and respect for where they’ve been.

To me, that’s what meaningful tourism is. It’s not just about the destination, but how you show up once you’re there.

That’s the kind of traveler I want to be. Not just a visitor, but someone who connects, learns, and cares.
