@orient_institut Saudi-Arabia's Path to the Future

Katharine Halls is a prizewinning Arabic-to-English translator and a literary agent at teneleven, who bring exciting contemporary Arabic literature to European readers. Her work appears in AGNI, The Kenyon Review, The Believer, McSweeney’s, Frieze, and elsewhere, and has been anthologised in The White Review Writing in Translation Anthology, Deep Vellum’s Best Literary Translations, and The Penguin Book of the International Short Story.

A practical workshop in translation focused on finding and conveying voice, and why voice matters. Participants will read and discuss some sample translations, gain an insight into a literary translator’s working method, and undertake a short translation of their own.

Part of “The Public Life of Empathy,” a multi-media, literary, translation, and art project that explores how writers and artists represent the psychological, ethical, and political manifestations of empathy as they are held witness to the violence inflicted on others during war and genocide.

You are invited to a thought-provoking lecture titled “Two Concepts of Restraint: The Logic of the State in Ibn Khaldun” by speaker Mahmoud Youness.

This lecture takes restraint—an analytic lens distilled from Ibn Khaldun’s notion of the “restrainer”—to specify the logic of the state. I contrast two forms. Freedom-preserving restraint is self-limitation sustained by shared norms and exemplary authority; it binds without commanding and keeps initiative alive. Order-producing restraint is the state’s tutelary rationality—fiscal-military and administrative—which pacifies by command, recenters politics on office, revenue, and rank, and converts social vitality into governable order. Ibn Khaldun held that the former invariably yields to the latter. This lecture argues that perhaps we can do better.

Join us this Thursday, 8 January, at the @orient_institut from 5-7pm for the launch of Manazir Journal 7: Defying the Violence - Lebanon’s Visual Arts in the 1980s, edited by Nadia von Maltzahn (OIB/ @lawha_erc ). Nadia von Maltzahn, Monique Bellan, Ashraf Osman, Cigdem Ivren and Greta Naufal will introduce the issue and accompanying display of archival material from art critic Joseph Tarrab’s archive, generously donated to the OIB, as well as material from Galerie Damo, the Sursock Museum, Mohammad El Rawas, Greta Naufal and Kufa Gallery. Two videos offer insights into the personal impact of forced displacement and the lived reality of artists who remained in Lebanon in the 1980s. Find all details on OIB’s website. Evening Lecture: "The Murder of Middle East Correspondent Robert Pfeffer, Beirut 1979" by Kilian Pfeffer

Abstract
Robert Pfeffer was a German journalist and foreign correspondent for STERN magazine who was killed in Beirut under mysterious circumstances in 1979. To this day, it remains unclear who was behind the murder and what the killer's motive might have been.
Robert's nephew, Kilian Pfeffer, has made it his mission to solve the case of who saw Robert Pfeffer as an enemy. His recent podcast “Two Shots to the Heart – Why did My Uncle have to Die?” deals with his uncle’s murder and leads him to the Lebanese Civil War, where he uncovers a network of terrorist organizations and intelligence agencies.

Bio
Kilian Pfeffer is a German journalist for public broadcasting network ARD and a current TV correspondent at the ARD Hauptstadtstudio in Berlin. He covers stories for national television about a wide range of political topics, especially the right wing party AfD (Alternative für Deutschland) and digitalization. He has developed and hosted story-telling podcasts such as “Christian Wulff – the Fall of the Federal President” and “Dark Matters – Secrets of the Secret Services.” His academic background includes a Master’s degree in Musicology and American Studies from Humboldt University Berlin, supplemented by studies in the U.S. under a Fulbright Scholarship.
