Last week, in collaboration with de Appel (@de_appel), we hosted the talk “Culture is — arts, imagination, and the planetary now"featuring architect and artist Ola Hassanain (@olahassanain) and Teesa Bahana (Director of 32° East @32degreeseast, a not-for-profit contemporary art space in Uganda). Moderated by the Fund’s Head of Programmes, Tessa Giller (@gillerish), the conversation dived into why culture is essential in times of global crises, and how artists and cultural spaces can build solidarity amid growing political, social, and environmental pressures.

This conversation was part of Exchanges, the Fund’s platform for creative cross-pollination that connects our international network with Amsterdam’s cultural landscape while building long-lasting relationships across the city’s diverse artistic scenes.

Exchanges is made possible through the generous support from the City of Amsterdam (@gemeenteamsterdam).

The Watching Counsel addresses the notion of (un)habitability in relation to ecological, political instabilities and the fragmented realities of the present. It generates new forms of e care, participation and collective agency. Conceived and spatially designed by artist and architect Ola Hassanai, the project unfolds in dialogue with curator simona markel dvorák. Together, they foreground the intensifying interconnectedness of global events that increasingly destabilize and fragilize life at its deepest levels, calling for renewed awareness of the interdependence between places, bodies, species, politics, and climate.

Water Collection Points (2026)

Within this exhibition, a series of water collection points constitutes one of three spatial vocabularies that collectively form a watching station. A watching station represents a spatial concept, a definitive script derived from "Tell The Water What The Clay Kept Secret." This larger project by Ola involves the development of scripts for whispers, watching, and arrivals, which contextualize the evolving material environments of communities within the Gezira Scheme, recognized as one of the world's most extensive irrigation projects.

I am pleased to provide moments of and leading up to the group exhibition, "Flour, Water, Soil," which commenced yesterday. This exhibition, initiated by Maria Khatchadourian, showcases new and adapted site-specific works from Areej Ashhab, the duo Common Ground, Ai Ozaki, and Belit Sağ. Collectively, these works explore themes of earth, seeds, water, fermentation, and destruction, examining the intricate relationship between care and violence within these contexts.

I am appreciative of the opportunity to contribute to this exhibition, integrating elements of a thought process that has received support from the Amsterdam Art Fund @afk020 over the past year.

It has been a distinct pleasure collaborating with Margarita Osipian and the entire team at @w139amsterdam , whose dedication, expertise, and supportive approach have been invaluable.

Join us on Saturday for the lecture performance 'The Watcher' by @olahassanain from 17:00 - 18:00
at Fobrux.

🌱In this lecture performance, Ola Hassanain highlights how a state of uninhabitability has been propped and maintained as a continuous cycle of catastrophe across Sudan and The Netherlands. A sonic and visual score, embodied by the character of The Watcher in motion, proposes ‘watching’ as a possible space to inhabit, to circumvent the foreclosure on our relationships to material environment, compromised under conditions of ecological erasures and evictions.

The lecture performance is in English.
