Born blind and raised in Alabama, Carter turned adversity into artistry, becoming one of the most distinctive and influential voices in soul music history. Across a career that spanned decades, his vocals, emotional storytelling, and unmistakable presence helped define the sound of Southern soul.

From timeless records like “Slip Away” and “Patches” to the cultural phenomenon of “Strokin’,” Clarence Carter created music that resonated across generations. His songs carried honesty, heartbreak, humor, and resilience delivered with a voice that could never be duplicated.
Beyond the music itself, Carter’s impact stretched far beyond the charts. His work helped shape the foundation of soul and R&B, influencing artists across multiple genres and generations. He remained a beloved figure in Black music whose catalog continued to connect with audiences old and new.
