Was ist ein Zeitraum? Wann wird er spürbar und wie lässt er sich künstlerisch visualisieren? Der Anlass, sich genau damit auseinanderzusetzen, ergab sich für den Künstler buchstäblich vor der eigenen Wohnungstür – in dem Haus, in dem er aufgewachsen ist, wo er seine Kindheit und Jugend verbrachte. Das Haus war 1893 in München erbaut worden, hatte Kriege und Renovierungen weitgehend unverändert überdauert. Auch die Stufen des Treppenhauses, die über 130 Jahre hinweg zu den Wohnungen unterschiedlichster Menschen und deren Leben führten, waren nie ausgetauscht worden. Bis zu jenem Werktag, an dem Geräusche aus dem Treppenhaus die Neugier des Künstlers weckten und er von dort arbeitenden Handwerkern eher beiläufig erfuhr, dass die Treppenstufen entfernt werden und durch neue ersetzt werden sollten – jene alten Holzstufen, die die Spuren von Generationen von Bewohnerinnen und Bewohnern sowie Besucherinnen und Besuchern des Hauses trugen, zu denen auch die Familie von Ömer Faruk Kaplan gehörte...

Das was davor kam und das was dazwischen stattfindet – die bildhauerischen Arbeiten von Ömer Faruk Kaplan (@oekaplan) lassen uns Fragen nach den Ursprüngen von Materialien stellen. Als in Form gegossene Zeitzeugnisse tragen Kaplans Installationen die Spuren seiner künstlerischen Prozesse und befinden sich im Wechselspiel zwischen Fragilitat und Starre.

Studium an der Akademie der Bildenden Künste München von 2022 bis 2025 (Prof. Florian Pumhösl), Diplom mit Auszeichnung. Studium an der Akademie der bildenden Künste Wien von 2017 bis 2023 (Bildhauerei und Grafik bei Prof. Christian Schwarzwald und Prof. Judith Huemer), Diplom mit Auszeichnung. Ausbildung zum Holzbildhauer mit Herbert Nauderer und Michael von Brentano an den Schulen für Holz und Gestaltung in Garmisch-Partenkirchen von 2014 bis 2017.

Ömer Faruk Kaplan untersucht, wie sich Zeit, Nutzung und Erinnerung in Materialien niederschlagen und in neue räumliche Konstellationen überführen lassen. Seine Wandobjekte aus gegossenem Beton, Metall oder fragil gewundenem Glas (SKINs) folgen einer seriellen Logik – repetitiv und gleichmäßig gesetzt, und doch nie identisch. Im Detail offenbaren sich Spuren der Bearbeitung, Risse, Oberflächenwiderstände – Zeichen einer lebendigen Beziehung zwischen Werk und Umgebung.

Als Künstler der dritten Generation von Einwanderern in Deutschland verhandelt Kaplan Fragen nach Zugehörigkeit, Herkunft und Differenz. Diese Themen tragen seine Materialien nicht illustrativ, sondern als sedimentierte Schichten einer geteilten Geschichte.

Die Galerie Reinthaler zeigt erstmals Beton- und Glasarbeiten aus Ömer Faruk Kaplans Arbeitszyklen SKINs und Territorial Monuments.

Die Praxis des jungen Künstlers, der die Akademien in Wien und München mit Auszeichnung abgeschlossen hat, bewegt sich zwischen Skulptur, Installation und zeichnerischer Spurensuche. Ausgehend von einer Ausbildung zum Holzbildhauer entwickelt er eine Arbeitsweise, in der Materialität, Fragment und Erinnerung zentrale Rollen spielen.

For the first time, the Reinthaler Gallery is showing concrete and glass works from Ömer Faruk Kaplan's SKINs and Territorial Monuments series.

The young artist, who graduated with honors from the academies in Vienna and Munich, works in a variety of media, including sculpture, installation, drawing, and tracing. Building on his training as a wood sculptor, he has developed a working method in which materiality, fragments, and memory play central roles.

What remains when a place disappears — when surfaces worn down by generations are replaced, disposed of, or covered up? Kaplan begins precisely here, with the material and metaphorical traces inscribed in wood, concrete, and glass.
